  11. Is IBM going to change the name of OS/2?  I was scanning the
  12. archives from *last year* and I found the following suggestions
  13. from the Great Sipples.  What happened to the name change?

  22. :I'd like to revive the discussion of a new name for OS/2.  In case you
  23. :haven't heard, IBM is interested in a new name for OS/2, something to
  24. :help its marketing.  And the company is listening to its users on the
  25. :matter.

  27. :So, here are a few suggestions to get us started.  I have no idea whether
  28. :these can be trademarked or not.

  30. :(1) Unity 1.0.  I like it because it has a "uni" at the front (popular with
  31. :    net people and hinting at that other operating system) and expresses
  32. :    a nice, positive message.  It also roughly describes OS/2 2.0 -- it
  33. :    unites DOS, Windows, OS/2 1.x and OS/2 2.x programs.
  34. :(2) Intuition 1.0.  OK, so perhaps this name stretches credibility.  I wouldn't
  35. :    call Windows intuitive.  When my PC starts asking _me_ the right questions
  36. :    I'll spring for intuitive.  The name also sounds a bit squishy, if that's
  37. :    an adjective.  But it isn't too bad.
  38. :(3) LetWin 1.0.  A little bit of a joke here.  An (the?) author of OS/2,
  39. :    with appropriate capitalization to pick on Micr*s*ft.
  40. :(4) WeWin 1.0.  Ditto.
  41. :(5) WeWon 1.0.  Sorry, just couldn't resist.
  42. :(6) WishList 1.0.  What more could we want in an operating system, after
  43. :    all?
  44. :(7) Reality 1.0.  I like this one.  IBM could take out a full page ad in the
  45. :    Wall Street Journal (remember Apple?) with the headline, "After all the
  46. :    Windows hype, isn't it time for..."  Perhaps they could even start the
  47. :    version number with 1.01, to sound like a college course.
  48. :(8) MouseTrap 1.0.  Fits in with the "A better DOS than DOS..." slogan
  49. :    ("Build a better...")  Not too corporate, though.  Then again, that
  50. :    was the problem with the previous name.
  51. :(9) Relief 1.0.  Might get in trouble with the stomach tablet people on this
  52. :    one, though.
  53. :10) TaskMaster 1.0.  On second thought, it sounds like the operating system
  54. :    is your boss, not the other way around.
  55. :11) MultiDOS 1.0.  Short, simple, and sweet.

  77. :Harmony 1.0.  This new operating system, after all, will allow DOS,
  78. :              Windows, and OS/2 programs to operate together harmoniously.
  79. :PC-DOS 6.0.   Microsoft would really get steamed with this one.  They'd have
  80. :              to skip a version number.  Plus it would satisfy all those
  81. :              columnists (who think themselves experts) who thought OS/2
  82. :              was a terrible name.
