- Is IBM going to change the name of OS/2? I was scanning the
- archives from *last year* and I found the following suggestions
- from the Great Sipples. What happened to the name change?

- :I'd like to revive the discussion of a new name for OS/2. In case you
- :haven't heard, IBM is interested in a new name for OS/2, something to
- :help its marketing. And the company is listening to its users on the
- :matter.
- :
- :So, here are a few suggestions to get us started. I have no idea whether
- :these can be trademarked or not.
- :
- :(1) Unity 1.0. I like it because it has a "uni" at the front (popular with
- : net people and hinting at that other operating system) and expresses
- : a nice, positive message. It also roughly describes OS/2 2.0 -- it
- : unites DOS, Windows, OS/2 1.x and OS/2 2.x programs.
- :(2) Intuition 1.0. OK, so perhaps this name stretches credibility. I wouldn't
- : call Windows intuitive. When my PC starts asking _me_ the right questions
- : I'll spring for intuitive. The name also sounds a bit squishy, if that's
- : an adjective. But it isn't too bad.
- :(3) LetWin 1.0. A little bit of a joke here. An (the?) author of OS/2,
- : with appropriate capitalization to pick on Micr*s*ft.
- :(4) WeWin 1.0. Ditto.
- :(5) WeWon 1.0. Sorry, just couldn't resist.
- :(6) WishList 1.0. What more could we want in an operating system, after
- : all?
- :(7) Reality 1.0. I like this one. IBM could take out a full page ad in the
- : Wall Street Journal (remember Apple?) with the headline, "After all the
- : Windows hype, isn't it time for..." Perhaps they could even start the
- : version number with 1.01, to sound like a college course.
- :(8) MouseTrap 1.0. Fits in with the "A better DOS than DOS..." slogan
- : ("Build a better...") Not too corporate, though. Then again, that
- : was the problem with the previous name.
- :(9) Relief 1.0. Might get in trouble with the stomach tablet people on this
- : one, though.
- :10) TaskMaster 1.0. On second thought, it sounds like the operating system
- : is your boss, not the other way around.
- :11) MultiDOS 1.0. Short, simple, and sweet.
- :
- :I'll keep thinking.

- :>>My suggestion would be PC-DOS 1.0 NG or NG-DOS 1.0. NG stands for "New
- :>>Generation". Feel free to add 386/486/32 Bit etc.
- :>Hee hee... here in the U.S., "NG" popularly stands for "No Good".
- :>(Some people prefer the amplified term "NFG", with the same F as in "RTFM".)
- :
- :I've gotten tired of initials, though. Here are a couple more suggestions
- :to keep us rolling along:
- :
- :Harmony 1.0. This new operating system, after all, will allow DOS,
- : Windows, and OS/2 programs to operate together harmoniously.
- :PC-DOS 6.0. Microsoft would really get steamed with this one. They'd have
- : to skip a version number. Plus it would satisfy all those
- : columnists (who think themselves experts) who thought OS/2
- : was a terrible name.
