- there've been a few messages asking questions related to how to install
- Windows NT (the July 1992 pre-release for ISVs build) disc, if their
- hardware is supported and what options are available if their hardware
- isn't yet supported by NT.
-
- there's a supported hardware list that Alistair posted to the newsgroup
- comp.os.ms-windows.announce newsgroup a while back. i'll include this
- list at the end of this message since it'll help those asking these
- questions.
-
- if your CD-ROM drive is supported by Windows NT, you can boot the
- install disk, which'll recognize the disc and install NT via the
- normal setup program. which is great.
-
- if your CD-ROM is NOT supported by Windows NT yet, then you can boot
- MS-DOS and use whatever software you used to access the CD-ROM drive
- (probably a device driver or two and Microsoft MSCDEX.EXE). once you
- can boot DOS and access this disc, you can use \dos2nt\dos2nt.bat to
- install NT. this method is much different that the normal setup
- program, see the release notes for more info.
-
- and for the question about how to install Windows NT on systems which
- don't have a CD-ROM drive, if you have a network, you can share this
- CD-ROM on the net (or just copy all the files onto your file server),
- and use dos2nt.bat with a remote drive letter. if you have funky
- network software, you might need to modify dos2nt.bat, it simply copies
- files to your local disk and updates the boot sector (via a debug script).
- then, before rebooting to Windows NT, you have to edit registry.ini, an
- ini file which this form of Windows NT (the setup program doesn't use it)
- needs to get started.
-
- hope this helps,
- lee
