I hate to say it - but back in the old PDP11 days they had overlays.
And learned to like them.

And we walked 50 miles to school, uphill, and we didn't have shoes then...

There is some satisfaction in shoehorning the most functionality in to
the smallest space.  The amazing fact that a PDP11 could multitask
with the same 64k of memory that ran CP/M was amazing to me.

I grew up with PDP11's and love the fact that RT11 can run foreground
and background tasks (up to 15 background tasks) in a machine with only
64kb of real memory is a fact that some people that haven't had to live
with those restrictions don't understand.

Unfortunately, you can't run X in that space, or NFS... Perhaps TCP/IP
though...
