  13. I tried installing Linux last night to no avail.  I made it through
  14. efdisk, mkfs, and pboot only to be greeted by a "kernal panic" error
  15. when I tried to boot using my HD as root.

  19. Bootimage v0.96c
  20. Rootimage v0.96
  21. pboot (whichever version in on tsx-11.mit.edu)

  23. System Configuration:

  25. Gateway 386/33
  26. 4 MB RAM
  27. Ultrastor ESDI controller  <- if this is the problem then you
  28.                               probably don't have to read the
  29.                               rest of my problem description 8^).

  31. I followed the install directions and everything seemed to go o.k.
  32.  
  33. 1) I used efdisk to change my 2nd partition (/dev/hda2) to a linux
  34.    partition.
  35. 2) Rebooted my machine.
  36. 3) The boot disk reported:
  37.         /dev/hda1 96373 DOS Large Volume ...
  38.         /dev/hda2 51561 unknown type -127 ...
  39.                         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  40.                         I don't know why it doesn't recognize this
  41.                         as a Linux part.  When I ran efdisk again
  42.                         it, efdisk, did correctly identify this as
  43.                         a Linux part.
  44. 4) I then ran 'mkfs -c /dev/hda2 51561'.  I got several error messages,
  45.    but they seemed to be related to bad blocks.  The process ran
  46.    through completion.
  47. 5) Install copied all of the executables and other files to the HD
  48.    without a hitch.  Well, at least it didn't report any problems.
  49. 6) Got the message about modifying the boot disk to use the HD as root.
  50. 7) Since I don't have Norton's disk editor, I used pboot to change
  51.    my bootimage.  Then I used rawrite to create a new boot disk.
  52. 8) Reset my computer with the new boot disk in AND....
  53.  
  54. After sok_init is finished get these messages:
  55.  
  56. Detected 0 disks 0 tapes total.
  57. Drive 0:
  58.   part 1 .....
  59.   part 2 .....
  60. Partition table ok.
  61. ll_rw_block: Trying to read nonexisting block device.
  62. bread failed
  63. kernal panic: Unable to mount root.

  65. I really want to get Linux running on my machine, so I would appreciate
  66. and help or suggestions.
