- Three days ago I heard of linux, and this is what I've done so far:
-
- I have a Gateway 486/25 MHz, with 200 MB IDE disk in the lab. It has an
- ethernet card connected to the university's network. I have the NCSA telnet
- program on the PC so I can telnet and ftp to the network from it. So I
- telnet'ed to tsx-11.mit.edu and got the boot and root images, rawrite.exe and
- some documentation, FAQ, etc. I've managed to get a 50 MB partition for
- linux. Rawrited images to floppies. Booted from floppies. Installed linux
- on the harddrive. Changed the bootimage's 508th byte. Made harddrive as the
- root.
-
- Now problems and questions:
- 1. I understand that I can get more binaries (e.g., 'du') from the same
- tsx-11.mit.edu, but how am I supposed to get them on my PC's linux partition.
- I tried the this: login to my unix account (where I'm sending this msg), ftp
- to tsx-11, get a binary---I went for the emacs-18.58, to be specific, 'cause
- I need an editor first, uncompress and untar it, ftp it to my PC. Now what?
- The binary (emacs) is a dos file, how can I get it over to the linux partition?
- Am I doing the right thing?
-
- 2. When I boot the computer up in linux with the harddrive as root, how can I
- get my login ID and password? Now I can only login as root, and linux asks
- for no password.
-
- 3. Can I boot linux from the harddrive?
