- Hello NetWorld,
-
- Because of a lot of hard work from linus, hlu and obz, it is now
- possible for me to compile and run a lot of X11 programs without
- needing more than a few tons of disk-space.
-
- I have made a list of the X11 clients outside of those supplied by obz
- which I now have more or less running on my system. Some programs have
- notes saying some of the things I remember from compiling. Please feel
- free to react via E-mail (suggestions, questions, your lists like this
- one). I would like other people to share their experience with me.
-
- Here is my list:
-
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 144384 Jul 12 17:14 astrolog*
- Calculate astrological birth-sheets. Also does other computations.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 148484 Jul 23 21:12 gwm*
- General Window Manager. Is VERY customisable. I needed 'lex' to
- compile this one, 'flex' didn't do it. It is rather buggy, but I don't
- know whether this is my port to linux, or the status of the software.
- The mwm-emulation (V1.1) has crashed a number of times, and the
- twm-emulation sometimes clones the icon manager window. I am still
- evaluating this one, so, if you have any information, please send it
- to me.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 33792 Jul 12 17:14 ico* The demo program. nice
- if done "-softdbl -faces -p8". Fun to see that it moves much faster if
- you can't see it (behind another window).
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 21504 Jul 12 17:14 kaleid*
- Create nice kaleidoscopic images.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 13312 Jul 12 17:14 maze*
- Demo program. Create and solve mazes in a window.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 197632 Jul 12 17:14 olvwm*
- The Open Look Virtual Window Manager. Nice, because it is a virtual
- window manager. Let your friends think you just bought a SUN(tm?).
- Compiled from the ported source from banjo.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 33792 Jul 12 17:14 oneko*
- ported source from banjo. Really needs the shape extension.
- Fun for cat-lovers. Or dog-lovers.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 50176 Jul 12 17:14 spider*
- Card game from MIT.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 rob users 680178 Jul 25 20:01 tgif*
- Looking at the size of this executable it will be clear that this one
- is in its evaluation/debugging phase. Someone told me that its
- quality makes 'xfig' fade completely.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 119812 Jul 26 17:38 vtwm*
- Virtual Tab Window Manager. This is the one I'm currently using. I
- think I'll have to recompile after getting LEX, although I did not
- find any problem after hacking the FLEX version. I know it should
- have problems, I removed some subroutines.....
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 13312 Jul 12 17:14 xabacus*
- Who needs to have lessons in usage of these famous Chinese
- calculators? (I now see that it should be linked '-N')
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 13312 Jul 12 17:14 xantfarm*
- Root window decoration.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 17408 Jul 12 17:14 xasteroids*
- Game.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 82948 Jul 13 20:37 xboard*
- Comes with xchess4.0. Needs a lot of memory when the computer plays
- against itself. On an otherwise X-empty machine (xclock,1 xterm):
- ---------------------------------------------------
- total used free shared
- memory: 12132 11988 144 728
- ---------------------------------------------------
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5412 Jul 23 21:49 xcb*
- X-CutBuffer. A recent post to the netnews. Gives access to all 8
- cutbuffers in the X server instead of only one.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 17408 Jul 12 17:14 xco*
- Display the X color database in a window.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 21504 Jul 12 17:14 xcoloredit*
- Just as it says.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9216 Jul 12 17:14 xcolormap*
- Just as it says.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9216 Jul 12 17:14 xcuckoo*
- Display a digital clock in the title bar of another window. Nice when
- you're out of display space.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 25600 Jul 12 17:14 xdaliclock*
- Animated digital clock.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2268 Jul 17 21:42 xdebt*
- The US-national debt, updated every second. Suffers from the floating
- representation bug in libc2.2.2.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 tex tex 46084 Jul 25 17:21 xdvi*
- Up to patchlevel 15. You should really try this version, and not any
- older one. This one contains a "grey" option, as in EmTEX under DOS,
- and can create fonts when they are needed, as in dvips. The grey
- option makes the text a lot more readable! Only change needed to get
- it compiled was in xdvi.h, to #undef'ine HAS_SIGIO. In the Imakefile,
- I put '-DGREY' '-DA4' and '-DMAKEPK' into the DEFS line, changed
- '-DBMSHORT' to '-DBMLONG' and removed '-DMSBITFIRST'.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 349184 Jul 12 17:14 xfig*
- Put figures in your LaTeX documents.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 99332 Jul 23 21:34 xfishtank*
- Rootwindow animation. This one really is beautiful, but it brings my
- 486/33 to a load-average of 0.35 when running alone....
- Running was a problem, until I noticed that the source code
- mentions that it expects a 16 bit result for random. It runs like a
- charm if this is changed to 32 bit, which can be done with an #ifdef.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 29696 Jul 12 17:14 xgas*
- Demonstration of the Ideal Gas law.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 21504 Jul 12 17:14 xgif*
- display GIF images. This is before I knew of xv...
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 17408 Jul 26 10:28 xlander*
- 3-dimensional lander game. Needed a hack to get it compiled: I really
- need to learn something about signals. How do I translate a 'sigblock'
- call into Linux? Well, it runs ok without those...
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 41984 Jul 12 17:14 xlife*
- Conway's life in the best version I've ever seen. Comes with excellent
- examples!
-
- -rwxr-sr-x 1 root mem 13312 Jul 12 17:14 xload*
- Display load-averages in a window. Got adapted source from banjo.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 50176 Jul 12 17:14 xlock*
- Lock X-server. Adapted source from banjo.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 21504 Jul 12 17:14 xmag*
- X-magnifying glass. from MIT
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 17408 Jul 12 17:14 xneko*
- The oneko cat, restrained to a window. Adapted source on banjo.

- Root-window animation.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6420 Jul 15 22:04 xsplinefun*
- Another very nice root window animation. Bring your X-server to
- its knees!
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 17408 Jul 12 17:14 xswarm*
- A swarm of wasps following a bee. Window animation.
-
- -rwxr-sr-x 1 games games 21504 Jul 12 17:14 xtetris*
- The famous block-building game.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 29696 Jul 12 17:14 xticktalk*
- Tell the time in a readable way. Multi-lingual.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 521216 Jul 11 23:33 xv*
- View just about any image format you could wish, including jpeg.
-
- -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 25600 Jul 23 22:30 xvier*
- Game: four in a row. This is not funny: I think the complete
- infallible strategy has been built into this program.
