- I don't know of any Unix that is currently supported on IBM-XT (i.e.,
- Intel 8088 chip).
- On the 80286 (i.e., IBM-PC/AT): Xenix, Minix and Coherent 3.x
- On the 80386: Many Unixes, including, Coherent 4.0, Linux,
- 386BSD
-
- >>>Coherent
-
- Best platform for learning how to use Unix. It is easy to install
- and has excellent, easy to understand manual. It is more forgiving
- than other Unixes. Coherent 3.x runs only small models programs
- (and so it doesn't support many popular GNU programs like C++).
- 32-bit Coherent 4.0 is now shipping and can handle large model (and
- GNU C++). In addition, 4.0 can be used as an inexpensive
- development platform for SCO and some other Unixes - big plus!! But
- networking (TCP/IP) won't be available for a while (along with
- virtual memory, shared libraries and other unimportant stuff...)
-
- >>>Xenix
-
- SCO Unix. Lots of device support and networking. See the Unix
- Buyers guide article in the news.answers news group for a
- comparison of big commercial Unixes.
-
- >>>Minix
-
- Standard for learning about operating systems, but probably not
- worth running otherwise (no TCP/IP, but probably has C++ maybe).
-
- >>>Lunix
-
- Er. Linux. Quickly developing free System V-like system. Flashy,
- but not particularly neophyte friendly. Supports GNU C++. Last I
- looked, only SLIP was working (Serial Line IP). Non-networked X
- Windows is available.
-
- 386BSD
-
- Free BSD-like system. Very complete. TCP/IP, C++, multitude of
- file systems including NFS, X Windows, etc. Not a lot of device
- support.
