- Maybe Brendan wants a "cc" test that overlooks the "To:" header and checks
- only for carboning?
-
- "to" tests in .elm/filter-rules already honor "Cc:"; they check both "To:"
- and "Cc:" for the presence in either (or absence from both) of the string.
-
- The only problem I've had is mail from one particular type of software, whose
- author insisted on straining RFC 822's rule (which I've not read but which
- he claimed exonerated him) that header names are case-insensitive. It uses
- "CC:" instead of "Cc:" and a "to" rule in .elm/filter-rules misses it.
- Likewise it uses "Reply-to:" instead of "Reply-To:" and if an Elm user [even
- one who doesn't use filter] tries to answer such a letter, Elm ignores
- "Reply-to:" and picks up the "From:" address, which is precisely how the
- sender wants replies not to be addressed.
-
- I've solved the CC: problem with a bit of circular logic: if my own name or
- the recognized name of a mailing list isn't on To: or Cc:, I test for "CC:"
- or "Apparently-[Tt]o:". If I find either, I adjust them to "Cc:" and "To:"
- and refilter the letter; if I find neither, I file it in a folder for blind
- carbons.
-
- If the letter truly is a blind carbon to me, and it has an Apparently-To: or
- a CC:, it can hit that routine twice, but no letter will go through it more
- than twice.
