  33. Realtime Issues
  34.  
  35. In the continuing effort to ensure that the realtime community's
  36. needs are addressed, the Ada 9X Teams are focusing attention on
  37. realtime primitives to support efficient customized
  38. synchronization.  While this concept is not new, the challenge will
  39. be to arrive on a set of primitives acceptable to the majority of
  40. realtime users.  As a starting point, the Ada 9X Project Office is
  41. surveying vendors to determine what sets of primitives they
  42. currently provide to users.  More on this later.

  44. GNU Ada 9X
  45.  
  46. The Ada 9X Project Office has awarded a contract to New York
  47. University for development of a GNU Ada 9X compilation systems on
  48. the SUNs and PCs.  The work is funded by the Ada Joint Program
  49. Office, DARPA, and the DoD CIM initiative.  Binding implementations
  50. to X windows, POSIX and MACH will also be developed.  In true Free
  51. Software Foundation tradition, the source code will be freely
  52. available.  The first delivery, expected in August 1993, will
  53. include most of the Ada 9X features.  For further information

  56. The Schedule
  57.  
  58. Work is progressing well.  The Ada 9X Mapping/Revision Team (MRT),
  59. Intermetrics, has moved into the revision phase, translating the
  60. Ada 9X mapping into language rules and final wording.  Two more
  61. world-class Ada experts have been added to the MRT:  Dr John Barnes
  62. and Dr. Mike Woodger.  Both have been associated with Ada since its
  63. inception.  John will be working on the Rationale Document and Mike
  64. will be providing review and comment on the final language
  65. reference manual wording.

  67. The Ada 9X standard will be composed of a core, a library, and
  68. optional annexes.  The annexes include: realtime, systems,
  69. numerics, distribution, safety critical/security, and information
  70. systems.  Annex authors are seeking volunteer reviewers.  If you

  89. We are anticipating completion of the standard by the fall of 1993
  90. when ISO and ANSI balloting will commerce.  The balloting process
  91. takes a year, so Ada should become a new ANSI and ISO standard by
  92. Dec 1994.

  94. Ada 9X User/Implementer Contract Option Awarded
  95.  
  96. All three Ada 9X User/Implementer Teams (AETECH, Tartan, and
  97. TeleSoft) were given the go-ahead in June to complete their Ada 9X
  98. implementations and provide feedback to the Ada 9X ACVC Team.  This
  99. activity is important as a sanity check on the Ada 9X development
  100. and as a facilitator for time-to-market.  This effort is being
  101. funded by the AJPO, SDIO, and the Air Force Electronics Systems
  102. Center's Computer Resource Management Technology Program.

  104. Ada 9X ACVC Draft Test Availability
  105.  
  106. One of the objectives of the ACVC review process for Ada 9X is to
  107. promote feedback to the test developers and provide compiler
  108. developers with maximum visibility into the process.  Accordingly,
  109. draft tests may be accessed by anonymous ftp over the Internet from
  110. "ftp.sei.cmu.edu" in the directory "pub/acvc-9X".  Naming
  111. conventions for the test are the same as for the Ada 83 ACVC test
  112. suite except that a date has been appended to the file and test
  113. names to identify the version of the test for the purposes of this
  114. preliminary release.  Initially the tests in the directory will be
  115. those that have been corrected, consolidated or otherwise modified
  116. as a result of formulating a baseline test suite which will be
  117. applicable to both Ada 83 and Ada 9X (the 9X-Basic release). 
  118. Subsequently, tests of Ada 9X specific functionality will be added. 
  119. It should be emphasized that tests in this directory represent
  120. work-in-progress and are subject to change.  Comments may be sent
  121. to ada9X-acvc@ajpo.sei.cmu.edu with the full name of the test in
  122. the subject line.

  131. Ada 9X Project Office Relocates
  132.  
  133. The Project Office and I moved 1500 miles west at the end of June
  134. from Florida to New Mexico.  The move went well (only one broken
  135. flowerpot and a missing electric drill which is probably packed
  136. with the Christmas decorations), but getting boxes unpacked and
  137. files organized at the office is a slow process so lease have
  138. patience.  I hope to have a secretary by the time you read this
  139. article, so perhaps the phone will not ring off the hook if you
  140. call.  All the Ada 9X Teams came to Albuquerque, New Mexico in July
  141. for team meetings.  We agreed it was the high point of the project
  142. as we dined at Sandia Crest 10,500 feet above sea-level.
