  20. Realtime Issues
  21.  
  22. In the continuing effort to ensure that the realtime community's
  23. needs are addressed, the Ada 9X Teams are focusing attention on
  24. realtime primitives to support efficient customized
  25. synchronization.  While this concept is not new, the challenge will
  26. be to arrive on a set of primitives acceptable to the majority of
  27. realtime users.  As a starting point, the Ada 9X Project Office is
  28. surveying vendors to determine what sets of primitives they
  29. currently provide to users.  More on this later.

  31. GNU Ada 9X
  32.  
  33. The Ada 9X Project Office has awarded a contract to New York
  34. University for development of a GNU Ada 9X compilation systems on
  35. the SUNs and PCs.  The work is funded by the Ada Joint Program
  36. Office, DARPA, and the DoD CIM initiative.  Binding implementations
  37. to X windows, POSIX and MACH will also be developed.  In true Free
  38. Software Foundation tradition, the source code will be freely
  39. available.  The first delivery, expected in August 1993, will
  40. include most of the Ada 9X features.  For further information

  43. The Schedule

  45. Work is progressing well.  The Ada 9X Mapping/Revision Team (MRT),
  46. Intermetrics, has moved into the revision phase, translating the
  47. Ada 9X mapping into language rules and final wording.  Two more
  48. world-class Ada experts have been added to the MRT:  Dr John Barnes
  49. and Dr. Mike Woodger.  Both have been associated with Ada since its
  50. inception.  John will be working on the Rationale Document and Mike
  51. will be providing review and comment on the final language
  52. reference manual wording.

  54. The Ada 9X standard will be composed of a core, a library, and
  55. optional annexes.  The annexes include: realtime, systems,
  56. numerics, distribution, safety critical/security, and information
  57. systems.  Annex authors are seeking volunteer reviewers.  If you

  73. We are anticipating completion of the standard by the fall of 1993
  74. when ISO and ANSI balloting will commerce.  The balloting process
  75. takes a year, so Ada should become a new ANSI and ISO standard by
  76. Dec 1994.

  78. Ada 9X User/Implementer Contract Option Awarded
  79.  
  80. All three Ada 9X User/Implementer Teams (AETECH, Tartan, and
  81. TeleSoft) were given the go-ahead in June to complete their Ada 9X
  82. implementations and provide feedback to the Ada 9X ACVC Team.  This
  83. activity is important as a sanity check on the Ada 9X development
  84. and as a facilitator for time-to-market.  This effort is being
  85. funded by the AJPO, SDIO, and the Air Force Electronics Systems
  86. Center's Computer Resource Management Technology Program.

  88. Ada 9X ACVC Draft Test Availability
  89.  
  90. One of the objectives of the ACVC review process for Ada 9X is to
  91. promote feedback to the test developers and provide compiler
  92. developers with maximum visibility into the process.  Accordingly,
  93. draft tests may be accessed by anonymous ftp over the Internet from
  94. "ftp.sei.cmu.edu" in the directory "pub/acvc-9X".  Naming
  95. conventions for the test are the same as for the Ada 83 ACVC test
  96. suite except that a date has been appended to the file and test
  97. names to identify the version of the test for the purposes of this
  98. preliminary release.  Initially the tests in the directory will be
  99. those that have been corrected, consolidated or otherwise modified
  100. as a result of formulating a baseline test suite which will be
  101. applicable to both Ada 83 and Ada 9X (the 9X-Basic release). 
  102. Subsequently, tests of Ada 9X specific functionality will be added. 
  103. It should be emphasized that tests in this directory represent
  104. work-in-progress and are subject to change.  Comments may be sent
  105. to ada9X-acvc@ajpo.sei.cmu.edu with the full name of the test in
  106. the subject line.

  111. 9X bulletin board, 1-800-Ada-9X25.  Also if you would like to

  115. Ada 9X Project Office Relocates
  116.  
  117. The Project Office and I moved 1500 miles west at the end of June
  118. from Florida to New Mexico.  The move went well (only one broken
  119. flowerpot and a missing electric drill which is probably packed
  120. with the Christmas decorations), but getting boxes unpacked and
  121. files organized at the office is a slow process so lease have
  122. patience.  I hope to have a secretary by the time you read this
  123. article, so perhaps the phone will not ring off the hook if you
  124. call.  All the Ada 9X Teams came to Albuquerque, New Mexico in July
  125. for team meetings.  We agreed it was the high point of the project
  126. as we dined at Sandia Crest 10,500 feet above sea-level.
