  24. I would say that text editors view text as a collection of lines, while word
  25. processors view the text as a collection of paragraphs and pages. The reason
  26. that text editors "don't do formatting type stuff" is that they don't 
  27. understand the concept of paragraphs or pages. 
  28.  
  29. With this in mind, I will now contradict myself (:-)) and say that the factors
  30. distinguishing text editors from word processors are somewhat blurry; some
  31. text editors do have a limited understanding of paragraphs. On the other hand,
  32. many word processors have evolved such that they are beginning to blur the
  33. distinction between them and desktop publishing.
