  17. But why would you ever want to drop to command mode after making
  18. a connection?  I've certainly never needed to do it on the same
  19. call that was used for file transfers of arbitrary data.

  26. If there is modern equipment at the remote end and it is set up
  27. properly, the speed matching can be done automatically by the
  28. remote modem.  Or if it doesn't let the modem handle it, if it
  29. expects the highest possible speed first, any character you send
  30. at a lower speed will look like a break character and cause a 
  31. speed switch.   Unfortunately, the person placing the call usually
  32. doesn't have any control over what is at the other end...

  36. Just decide ahead of time whether you want to talk to the modem
  37. or the remote host.  If you are interested in the remote, disable
  38. the modem escape sequence and don't worry about it any more.
