-
- "Courier" is USRobotics' higher line of modems (the lower being the
- Sportster); it covers many modems from 1200 bps (or was it 2400 bps?) up.
- There are Couriers that speak HST, Couriers that speak V.32, Couriers that
- speak both, and Couriers that speak neither...
-
- "HST" is a type of high speed modulation not compatible with anything
- (other than other HSTs), but it is perhaps the most popular modulation
- technique among BBSes because of USR's early entry into the low-price high
- speed modem field and their agressive SYSOP discount programme. This is in
- the process of changing, now that V.32 and V.32bis modems are coming down to,
- and below, the price of HSTs. Also, many of the HSTs out there are Dual
- Standards, which also support V.32 or V.32bis.
-
- A Courier HST 9600 will speak 9600 bps to other Courier HSTs (which come in
- 9600, 14400, and 16800 bps models, the latter two available in Dual Standard
- models), but will connect only at 2400 bps to non-HST modems. The HST 9600
- supports MNP (MNP5 data compression if the ROM revision - given by ATI0 - is
- 964, or MNP3 error correction if it's lower).

-
- As I said, there are 9600, 14400, and 16800 bps models of HST. The last
- 9600 bps unit was made more than two years ago. The first Dual Standard
- arrived with the switch from 9600 to 14400 bps HST, but it had only V.32 (i.e.
- 14400 HST but only 9600 bps V.32), while later models sported 14400 (and,
- later, 16800) bps HST and 14400 bps V.32bis.

- Unlike software, it's hard to get an unlicensed copy of hardware. USR will
- probably be as friendly to you as a used buyer as they would be to an original
- customer.
