- Could points all around. I'd like to add a couple of my own (at
- least I think their good).
-
- As a software developer for ethernet,
- I have had to deal with the issue of counting SQE, causing major
- alarms for it, or ignoring it. The last I find unacceptable.
- Many customers however, insist that they be allowed to run without
- it and don't want alarms set off for each packet transmitted. My
- friends in marketing like to sell to anyone and so I have to be
- happy to just count SQE and if possible allow the customer to
- configure if it should trigger an alarm.
-
- At least three times in the last five years, I have been called
- to diagnose a problem at a customer's site that would have been
- caught had SQE been enabled on the tranceiver. Imagine, your
- responsible to keep your net up and it is limping because of
- faulty tranceiver on a terminal server or router. You call for
- help and wait a day for someone to show up (like me). And, when
- that person does show up it is shown that if you would only
- configure your cabling properly you could have diagnosed and fixed
- the problem in a matter of minutes. Now imagine that your company
- is a major stock trading company and all of your brokers were down
- for a day and a half because of your mistake. Where's your new
- place of employment?
-
- SQE has a purpose. USE IT.
-
- My other point. There are some controllers on the market that require
- SQE. Otherwise, after each transmission the controller has to have
- the error condition cleared. It may be a minor point, but the clearing
- of this condition after every transmission steals CPU cycles from other
- functions that the processor should be doing. This can have a serious
- effect on the through put of a device connected to the ethernet.
