- Hello net,
- I have a list of general questions tacked on below. I apologize if some
- of these are on the FAQ or have been beat to death etc.... But, the reason
- I am posting this is to get many answers, not the single answer in the FAQ.
-
- Some of these questions have been addressed by the staff at my
- institution, but I have been unable to obtain a solid answer. I am hoping
- that by receiving many different opinions I can summarize and consolidate
- some information into soething useful. Please respond by e-mail to the
- addresses below. Thanks!

- 1. Standard states that an ethernet network may have 101 segments, (1
- backbone and 100 branch segments.) Do segments off of a repeater, (the
- repeater taps directly into the backbone), count towards the 100 branch
- segment total? A multiport transceiver?
-
- 2. How do you count the 1024 station limit. (This is similar to number one.
- In a network with bridges, routers, repeaters, etc.... what devices count
- toward the 1024?)
-
- 3. If a building has 2 LAN's, each with its own RG-8 backbone, and you want
- to connect them together.... What is the best way? Can you stick a
- transceiver on both pieces and run RG-58 between them? Why/Why not?
-
- 4. In a magazine I read that the Max. length for a transceiver drop cable is
- 50 meters, but "When using the more flexible office transceiver cabling, the
- maximum cable length is 12.5 meters." What is this 'flexible office
- transceiver cabling'?
-
- 5. What is the difference between a HUB and a repeater? What is a HUB?
-
- 6. What is cascading repeater/HUB's?
-
- 7. What are the counts for repeaters, routers, bridges? How do you count
- them? ie.... When do they reset? ie.. after passing through a router?
-
-
- Thanks again,
- Steve....
