  17. A good reference for various compression techniques is "The Data
  18. Compression Book" by Mark Nelson, from M&T Books.  The book includes
  19. chapters on Huffman, Lempel-Ziv, arithmetic coding, JPEG, and other
  20. methods.  It also includes source code in the book and on IBM disk for
  21. each of the compression methods it describes.  I believe it also
  22. includes test files of various formats to demonstrate the methods and
  23. provide benchmarks.
