- Ah. Obviously Larry has found a B1-certified version of DOS. And
- his home never gets burgled. Big budget for the armed security
- guards too, in case something better preparred than a burgler tries
- to get in. Lots of reinforced concrete to discourage people blasting
- their way in.
-
- Seriously: Nobody's security is perfect. The U.S. Government has
- had spies steal highly classified documents, despite security that
- makes anything Murph could install look like child's play.
-
- Most data leaks are caused by mistakes, and nobody's perfect.
-
- I like to think my data security is better than average, but I sure
- wouldn't bet $100,000 on it being perfect. I know my physical
- securith isn't perfect---I've got windows in my apartment (!), and
- even the walls are only brick and concrete. The door's only solid
- wood. There's typically several hours a day when there's nobody
- here.
-
- Murph's right: Nobody who could conceivably use this software has
- security that justifies a potential $100,000 loss. People with
- that kind of security aren't running Waffle and mail servers.
-
- My computer, worth less than 1/50th of that amount, I insured
- against theft. Obviously, I view my computer as potentially
- "stealable", and if stolen, the software installed on it would be
- in the hands of a thief. The computer's insured for $2,000 at a
- cost of $20 a year---but I bet the insurance company would want a
- much higher percentage of the amount insured for that software,
- since it could be stolen over the telephone lines.
-
- Sure, the shareware cost is only $17, but the insurance on the
- $100,000 risk would probably be $5,000 a year.
-
- (Commercial plug: If anyone in Ontario seriously needs this sort
- of insurance protection, Colley, Borland and Vale Insurance Brokers
- is probably capable of writting it.)
