  19. After pestering him in e-mail messages over a few years, Hal Varian has
  20. kindly provided me with the files for his VERTEX packages, which are now
  21. available from SHSU.  Whether his decision was based on shutting me up or
  22. in his own recognition that this is a valuable package in its own right, I
  23. may never know -- however, I extend my sincerest thanks to him (for the
  24. economists out there -- yes, it is *that* Hal Varian; I'll pester just
  25. about anyone in e-mail).  Some years back (1987 or 1988), he generously
  26. provided me these files -- they have many neat tricks which I have employed
  27. in designing layouts for various economics and business-related periodicals
  28. since that time.

  30. Attached is the description file for this package.  As noted, it is
  31. sincerely hoped that the field of economics can get a little closer to our
  32. "hard" science colleagues in developing TeX tools for our profession --
  33. VERTEX is a good candidate for a starting point!!

  46. The VERTEX package includes Hal Varian's <Hal.Varian@umich.edu> macros to
  47. Visualize Economic Reports in TeX.  Please note that (a) this package is
  48. based on plain TeX and is not an extension to any other package now
  49. available, (b) it is relatively old, although not outdated, and (c) it is
  50. not presently supported by its author.  Professor Varian, adequately busy
  51. with his own research agenda at Michigan, his textbooks (which he has
  52. prepared in TeX, by the way!), and his other highly recognized activities,
  53. was kind enough to allow the SHSU archives to include this work.  It is
  54. hoped that the work he has provided may serve as a springboard for further
  55. developments in the field of economics within other TeX-related packages. 
  56. Indeed, he hints that this may be reviewed by him for further development
  57. as an application in LaTeX and BibTeX once LaTeX3 is available.

  59. The package is based around a controlling macro, VERTEX.TEX, which calls
  60. various styles for production.  These styles (specific to VERTEX -- these
  61. are NOT LaTeX styles) produce output largely compatible with the following
  62. economic journals (economists will recognize the twist on titles used by
  63. Varian), including multicolumn layout (where appropriate), location of
  64. footnotes and formatting of references sections.  They include:
  65.  AER.STY --- for the Armenian Economic Review.
  66.  ECNMET.STY --- for Economagica.
  67.  JEP.STY --- for the Journal of Economic Perspectives.
  68.  JET.STY --- for the Journal of Economic Theorems.
  69.  JPE.STY --- for the Journal of Polemical Economy.
  70.  QJE.STY --- for the Quartered Journal of Economics.
  71.  RESTUD.STY --- for Review for Economic Students.
