- OK... I have a small question, which I think I've answered for myself,
- but would like to see if anybody can provide a better answer.
-
- We have a VM/XA system, using 327X terminals. Occasionally, it needs
- to speak with non-VM systems, which might use a variety of non-block
- oriented terminals, specifically VT-100s and their ilk. The trouble
- is this: when the 3270 terminal gets the VT-100 type commands, the
- terminal just puts funky characters on the screen (the VT-100 control
- characters). Naturally, we'd like to see the control characters
- *interpreted* and the screen cleared, cursor moved, etc.
-
- My solution to the problem is really a non-solution: forget about the
- control characters and go on with life. I don't think there's a terminal
- emulator for VT-100s running on VM/XA, and least of all I don't think
- there's one that VM Telnet can use, or a terminal emulation mode in
- VM Telnet.
-
- An alternative solution is to connect to VM with a terminal in line
- mode. This presents that great `.' prompt, and allows semi-normal
- interaction with VM. The Grand Idea is to allow the VT-100 control
- codes to pass right through VM and on to one's terminal, thereby
- solving the problem of the control codes. The screen clears, cursors
- jump, etc., right? Wrong. VM Telnet *requires* a 3270 full-screen
- terminal. Line-mode is out of the question.
-
- Yet a third solution to the problem is to once again connect to VM
- in line-mode, but this time use a Telnet derived directly from whatever
- sources BSD has. This would remove the line-mode restriction, and
- further allow the VT-100 control characters to pass through to the
- terminal. I like this one best, and will proceed with it if no-one
- tells me its already been done.
-
- Any other solutions? I solicit your responses.
- Thanks!
