- In second response to the message copied below (Ron Johnston pointed out the
- incompleteness of my first response -- Thanks, Ron):
-
- Foreign records loaded into NOTIS by the old NOTIS loaders (LBC series)
- correctly translated all characters, without regard to the destination record
- type, tag, or subfield (I have not used or examined the new, LCN series
- loaders). VHLD display does not retranslate characters upon display so special
- characters and diacritics show up as garbage. BUT!! when the VHLD records have
- been converted to MHLD (no character translation is involved), the MHLD display
- will retranslate them and all characters should display correctly. Special
- characters and diacritics created in NOTIS VHLD records will be stored as
- incorrect codes because no translation takes place during VHLD online data entry
- and will display as garbage both before and after conversion to MHLD.
