- Thanks for all your help on my config.sys, especially to Paul Bodin who has
- been particularly patient and competent (a great combination of virtues!). I
- solved my problems and have a working config.sys using DOS 5 files. I had QEMM
- 5.1 which I have disabled; I'm not sure I see a reason to buy QEMM 6 at this
- point--I'm just beginning to understand what is happening in DOS, and don't
- need another level of confusion. I noticed one problem apparently in how the
- DOS 5 upgrade worked. I went from DOS 4.1 to DOS 5 using their upgrade, but
- that left various versions of several files which were incompatible (e.g.
- HIMEM.SYS). I kep getting warnings that that version of HIMEM.SYS in my
- config.sys file was incompatible with EMM386.EXE. It took a NB find command to
- locate all the discrepancies. Another problem was in the install program for
- the driver for my CD-ROM reader---it kept configuring my system for several
- CD-ROM readers. I finally rolled up my sleaves, disregarded the install
- program, and edited it until all works. Now if NB comes next week.
- A note to Paul Bodin: I got my config.sys working as you suggested; I changed
- my path to convert all references to NB to NB4 (subdirectory where the beta
- version resides). This morning I typed NB and got NB4, so far great. Then I
- typed F1 to get the menu to download a printer. As soon as I typed F1 the color
- changed to violet and the border on the menu changed to x's. I'm just going to
- wait until I get the final version next week. I might even try reading---books
- are a lot easier to configure!
