- Another trick using FIND with wildcard characters and then calling the
- files directly from that directory list is to set your (NB 3.0) New Window
- default in DEFAULT.SET to NW=2 so the directory listing will NOT
- disappear but will remain for future use. The explanations for the NW=
- settings is:
-
- ;Automatic New Window
- ; NW=0 for prompt if calling file/directory in occupied window
- ; NW=2 for automatically opening new window (leaves directory on
- ; screen and opens another window)
- ; (NW=1, for automatic opening and closing of windows,
- ; is NOT valid option, despite what manual indicates)
- NW=2
-
- The problem with this (in NB 3.x) is that the directory usually
- changes to overstrike mode in the process, so that the NEXT time you
- call a file from the list, it will open in overstrike mode; you have
- to keep your eye on the small "o" in the upper right corner. I've been
- living with this for years, because of the convenience of retaining my
- directory screen, but I also set the error beep for overstrike to warn
- me as soon as I start typing over text:
-
- ;Overstrike Click
- ; Defines tone (1st value) & duration (2nd) of beeps (0 to 65534):
- ; Beep when NB overstrikes a character (setting of 0,0 is OFF)
-
- OB=1612,20596
-
- It's a little clumsy, but it does the trick. (And you thought you were
- crazy...) The problem is fixed in NB4, where the NW=1 setting now works.
