  15. The University of Richmond recently added a computer-supported writing
  16. classroom with networked machines capable of running up-to-date
  17. software.  This left me scrambling to discover which pieces of software
  18. our faculty would like to use in the classroom.  After working with
  19. several instructors who will work in the new room, we decided upon
  20. a few pieces of software for those new to teaching with computers:

  22. --Bedford's *Hotline* on-screen handbook.  This comes as a freebie for those
  23. who adopt the *Bedford Handbook*; Bedford Books even gave us a site license.
  24. The software is limited in scope, since it only covers issues of mechanics,
  25. grammar, documentation, etc.  We liked *Hotline* because it is very
  26. compatible with *WordPerfect 5.1*, which we use in our classroom.  Students
  27. have also found *Hotline* very easy to use.

  29. --Daedalus.  Actually, our University Computing office bought this one
  30. without asking any of us in the English Department, but we're all happy
  31. to have it.  I'm a novice with this software, but we will begin to use
  32. it this year for collaborative writing assignments.

  34. --We wrote *WordPerfect* macros.  Since *Hotline* does not discuss the
  35. writing process, writing-in-the-disciplines, etc., we wrote another
  36. set of on-screen helpers that deal with a range of topics.  This was
  37. time-consuming, but CHEAP.  It also enabled faculty in our writing-
  38. across-the-curriculm program to get involved with our project.
