  17. The Rice University CWIS, currently running only as a prototype, has this
  18. feature.  The people who generate our printed phone book gave me the staff
  19. data in two forms: (1) a person-by-person alphabetical listing, from which
  20. I generated a simple CSO database; and (2) a "hierarchical" listing by
  21. department.  The latter I am serving out using WAIS indexes.  I found
  22. that "paragraph" mode worked fine with very little massaging of the
  23. input data necessary.  I glued both pieces together using Gopher, which
  24. is the software platform for our CWIS as a whole.

  63. Since the Departmental Directory is served out using WAIS keyword
  64. indexes, a user doesn't have to know an exact organizational name
  65. to look something up: a shred of information, like the name of a
  66. building or one of the faculty members or supervisors, is enough to
  67. summon up the whole listing.  (Unfortunately it doesn't extend down
  68. to level of non-supervisory grunts like me. :-) )
