  13.           This is in response to the comment from Stanislas concerning
  14.           linking analytics.  This has been a serious problem for
  15.           Oregon State University since we got on the system several
  16.           years ago.  We have attempted to use the Bound With option
  17.           in the item records.  While it is possible to link with this
  18.           option, there are numerous difficulties.  The option was
  19.           apparently designed to be used only for books which are
  20.           bound together.  Trying to use it for analytic linking
  21.           requires (at least from our observations) that lines 6, 7,
  22.           and 8 should display in the parent item and the analytic
  23.           item.  Currently only line 6 is lifted from one record and
  24.           displayed on the Detailed Display of the other.  This means
  25.           that to retain all call number information that copy and
  26.           volume information must be entered into line 6 of the serial
  27.           item records.  This (besides being incorrect inputting)
  28.           causes a mess in the call number search since every volume
  29.           and copy number is listed when you browse through the call
  30.           number index.

  32.           There are difficulties with analytics since there are two
  33.           kinds--those that are several titles bound in one physical
  34.           volume and those that are separate titles which are
  35.           individual physical volumes of a serial.  I discussed this
  36.           with Eloise when the GEAC team was here last November and
  37.           thought that we agreed the solution was probably a matter of
  38.           displaying lines 6, 7, and 8 instead of just line 6.  As
  39.           far as I know nothing further has happened on this issue.

  41.           As I said, this is a major barcoding and circulation problem
  42.           for OSU.  We discussed a similar fix to the one Stanislas
  43.           has come up with (using a note to direct people to do
  44.           another search to locate the Circulation information) and
  45.           decided not to pursue it because we didn't think the public
  46.           would do the extra search.  Also, this is a situation which
  47.           should receive attention from GEAC.  User friendly systems
  48.           should not require users to do extra searches to get the
  49.           information that they want concerning one book.

  51.           I'd be happy to discuss this further with people interested
  52.           in analytics linking and formulating a strategy to get GEAC
  53.           to resolve this issue.
