  19. I've been known to visit Crown here at there. The discounts can be nice and
  20. their remainder racks sometimes turn up intresting (and cheap) gems.

  22. On the other hand, you should remember that the chains (more Dalton adn
  23. Walden than Crown) buying policies and quick return practices are a good
  24. part of the reason why books go out of print so quickly, why you can't find
  25. many titles three weeks after they're published, why the mid-list and
  26. back-lists are being decimated and why there are only two classes of authors
  27. today: really rich ones and starving ones.

  29. (in other words, support bookstores that buy intelligently and not based on
  30. spreadsheets and return-on-equity models. It'll be a cold day in hell before
  31. I step into a Walden or Dalton, at least as long as real bookstores exist).

  33. The following has been a paid political announcement by the committee to
  34. preserve bookstores that sell books and not product (by someone who'd really
  35. like to make his living writing, but the chain buying policies have really
  36. hurt people's ability to survive in the writing field).

  38. On the other, other hand: it's recently been announced that Walden is
  39. committing itself to a new chain of "super" bookstores -- 25,000 and up
  40. square foot monsters that'll be targetting both Crown and the buyer who's
  41. interested in selection isntead of top-40. If that actually comes off,
  42. there's hope it'll significantly iomprove backlist and mid-list title
  43. availability, because they'll HAVE to start buying that stuff again to stock
  44. the superstores. Those stores I'll happily buy in, but the current chains
  45. are a major factor in the generization of the genre's, the lack of diversity
  46. on the shelves and the early death of many a good book.
