- "One need not pay the postman" and "you make it harder than it need be"
- are quite correct in English. The 'be' in 'need be' is in the
- subjunctive. The 'need' without the 's' is the standard form of the
- verb and does not involve the use of the subjunctive. It all depends on
- how the sentence is formed:
