  13. Although "french" is often used in English to refer to things that are
  14. risque or otherwise unEnglish, the term \frenchspacing in TeX was
  15. intended quite literally to refer to a difference in style between
  16. French typographers and American ones.  It might have been better to
  17. give it a more descriptive name (like \uniformspacing), but Knuth
  18. chose the word and the meaning has been frozen.

  20. Followups about "french" as an adjective should continue to
  21. alt.usage.english, but the spacing discussion has pretty much
  22. exhausted its appeal here (try comp.fonts if you wish to discuss
  23. typography).
