  15. Just caught a glimpse of the recent thread on NLP.
  16. I had a negative experience, I'd like to share.

  18. I'd read an extensive article in the Sunday paper
  19. about a con-artist who took women for all they had.
  20. He'd learned NLP and was expert at manipulating
  21. people.

  23. Since I didn't want to fall victim to a manipulator
  24. like that, I enrolled in an adult education course
  25. teaching NLP.

  27. The instructor had horrid ego problems.  He'd been
  28. very overweight all his life, had a stomach operation,
  29. and no one would know he once had a huge body.

  31. The scars from his younger years (cruel peers, etc.)
  32. just stuck with this guy, and he obviously wanted a
  33. way to get even with the 'world'.  He was also into
  34. hypnosis and very impressed by great hypnotists.

  36. The class had about 45 people in the beginning.  At
  37. the end it was 6-7.  I stayed only because I wanted
  38. to learn everything this guy did.

  40. It`s hard to describe.  But, the big thing was eye
  41. contact.  Once he had that, you were his victim.
  42. Again and again, he'd victimize people in the 
  43. audience, by locking them in with that eye contact
  44. and then basically mocking them by copying their
  45. body posture.  It was humiliating.

  47. He never got me once, not even when he phoned me
  48. at home (yes it can work on the phone, too).  In
  49. class I never allowed eye contact with him.  Not
  50. until the last class, that is.

  52. I got there late, and had to sit facing him.  While
  53. speaking, he suddenly sat down directly across from
  54. me which caused me to look at him.  He immediately
  55. went into a body posture exactly matching mine.  
  56. And he held it, while my brain was freaking out 
  57. trying to figure out what was going on.

  59. If I'd been able to break the eye contact, it would
  60. not have worked.  But, it happened so fast that he
  61. had me confused.  As my face turned a painful red
  62. in horrible embarrassment, he stood up, smiled,
  63. and nodded at me saying, "Yes."  It was akin to
  64. rape.  I'd been violated.

  66. Maybe you can imagine my rage when I left that
  67. class, maybe not.  But, I know enough now to
  68. recognize it when I see it.

  70. This was NLP being used in a damaging context.
  71. I might also add, that Richard Bandler, the father
  72. of this stuff, ended up arrested in Santa Cruz
  73. some years back after the murder of a prostitute
  74. in his apartment.  Drugs were involved.

  76. I do believe NLP can be used in positive ways, 
  77. like neutral mediators trying to settle cases
  78. out of court.  But, it doesn't hurt to be familiar
  79. with both sides of the coin.
