  13. My mother was told by her father that his grandfather was married to
  14. a blackfoot woman, or that he was the son of a blackfoot woman and a
  15. Canadian trapper, who knows which anymore.
  16. But I identify with a people (actually two, but not to cloud an issue)
  17. and strive to act as though I was a contributor to that people.
  18. I have a co-worker who knows his great-grandfather, a full-blood
  19. trail-of-tears Cherokee, but this all means nothing to him. He
  20. identifies himself only as a U.S. American. What is an Indian?

  22. The U.S. Government says if you're 1/16 blood, you're an indian for
  23. purposes of entitlement, you are (if your g-g-grandmother is the ONLY
  24. native blood source) 1/32 hopi. Does this mean you're NOT an indian?
  25. I find similar thoughts pondering the question "Who's a Christian"
  26. and would rather look at who is doing the work of mending peoples
  27. and nations than who goes where on Sundays to determine these things.

  29. Clearly you have seen that what OTHERS see you to be influences what
  30. you are able to do, or how difficult anything in particular would
  31. be to accomplish, but very little is impossible to dedicated people.
  32. Getting admitted into cultural and religious circles may be a matter
  33. time and labors faithfully done.
