  17.         There are Native American communities in your own country who

  19. Cree, the Mohawk, the Gitkisan and Wet'su'weten, the Innu, and the
  20. Gwi'tchin). There has been no want of information on their problems on
  21. NativeNet, but I cannot remember having seen any mention of the fact that
  22. Euro-Canadians encouraged most of the Indians in Canada to emphasize a
  23. nomadic lifestyle through the fur trade for nearly two centuries. Now
  24. that the fur trade has declined, this lifestyle is seen as an encumbrance
  25. to exploitation of natural resources <<and>> the enhancement of provincial
  26. revenues. It must be admitted by your government that, until these natives
  27. have <<viable>> alternatives to hunting and trapping which will allow them
  28. to maintain their identity as distinct ethnic groups, it is a grave injustice
  29. to force them to abandon this lifestyle and live on the dole. It is also an
  30. injustice to Canadian taxpayers to expect them to foot the bill.
  31.         I would suggest that you find some organization in Canada which not
  32. only acts as an advocate for the First Nations, but seeks workable solutions
  33. to their problems. Then become as active a participant as you have the time
  34. and energy for. If you and other Canadians are successful in influencing the
  35. Canadian government to significantly change its policy toward First Nations
  36. and help them develop new economies instead of destroying existing ones, you
  37. may give Native Americans in the U.S. the best support you can: by providing
  38. possible examples of economic and cultural successes.
