- I know you asked for direct replies, but this deserves to be brought to
- everyone's attention. The professor probably thinks that bringing native
- art forms into the public eye is not detrimental to the native culture, even
- if it is not _authentic_. The difference of opinion, I would guess, involves
- what constitutes harm to the native community. Consider the appeal of rap in
- the US. If the use of 'Western' styles by others is a result of cultural
- imperialism, why is the use of 'non-Western' styles by 'Westerners' also
- cultural imperialism by 'Westerners'?
- What does your teacher say constitutes harm? S/He ought to have told
- you so that you would understand why your claim doesn't make the grade. For
- myself, I'd have to say that cultural harm is to be measured by the rules of
- the culture in question.
