  25. The common procedure for sacrifice is to pour scented oils and spices
  26. over whatever is being consecrated. Jacob was consecrating the pillar
  27. stone as the basis of a cairn of witness, a sacred object or emissary
  28. of the divine to witness an oath or agreement. By performing the
  29. sacrifice of oil on the stone, he summoned a witnessing power into the
  30. cairn which was able to give force to his agreement with his father in
  31. law Laban. I don't think it has much to do with phallic cults, mostly
  32. because they covered up or surrounded the pillar with other stones to
  33. form a cairn.
