  35.   Perhaps the context isn't as plain as you would think Tom. In 
  36.   Matthew 15, we get another view of this conversation, from a Jewish 
  37.   source (Matthew himself). From his perspective, the point of what is 
  38.   being said from Yeshua has more to do with cerimonial hand washing 
  39.   than "FOOD."

  41.       Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from 
  42.     Jerusalem and asked, -Matthew 15:1
  43.     "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They 
  44.     don't WASH THEIR HANDS BEFORE THEY EAT!" -Matthew 15:2

  46.   Here is the reason for confronting Yeshua. Traditional hand washing. 
  47.   The issue is clean hands not clean food. Then Yeshua gives other 
  48.   examples of men following man's rules to honor man, and says this of 
  49.   those who seek the approval of men over the approval of God:

  51.     "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far 
  52.     from me. -Matthew 15:8
  53.     They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by 
  54.     men.'" -Matthew 15:9

  56.   Then Yeshua makes his conclusion:

  58.     Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. 
  59.     What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but 
  60.     what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.'"

  64.     "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. -Matthew 15:16

  81.   The food Yeshua would be talking about, in this context would be the 
  82.   legal foods allowed by Torah. This would not include basted ham.

  87.   The "nothing" Yeshua is talking about (IMHO) is what tradition said 
  88.   would defile you if you didn't perform the special union hand washing.
