  28. According to the Reform responses posted by Dan Faigin on
  29. soc.culture.jewish, the official Reform position is that the child
  30. of a "mixed marriage" is Jewish if and only if the child makes a
  31. positive commitment to Judaism.  The argument with Conservative and
  32. Orthodox movements lies in what is required for such a commitment.
  33. However, acceptance of xianity is definitely a sign that the child
  34. has NOT been "brought up Jewish" and therefore would not be
  35. accepted as Jewish by the Reform movement.

  37. The Orthodox and Conservative movements still regard the child of 7
  38. as born Jewish but not practicing Judaism.  Also, evidence would
  39. have to be provided that the mother is indeed Jewish since she
  40. could be the product of an invalid relationship as in 8.  There are
  41. people who find that the original Jewish mother in the matrilineal
  42. line is too far back for good proof so they go through a formal
  43. conversion just to make sure.

  45. In either case the child is being raised as an xian and therefore
  46. would not be regarded as Jewish for aliyah.  The state regards
  47. someone who converts (or is practicing) another religion as not
  48. Jewish for the purpose of the Law of Return.  This is for the
  49. secular law only and not according to Halacha.

  51. Note that all of this type such as Jews for j, mj, or whatever they
  52. call themselves fall under this category.
