- If you refer to NYT Book Review 21 Jun 1992, the answer is "yesnomaybe."
-
- Yes, this is interactive written material. Some is on-line in the sense
- of being distributed over networks and multiple sites, some runs
- remotely from servers, and some is on-line in the sense of on your
- machine (the sense apparently used in the NYT article).
-
- No, this is not literature *yet*. Most people in alt.hypertext seem to
- be talking about interactive manuals and help files of various kinds.
- Of course there's lots of talk about the hypertext engines available to
- create these hypertexts.
-
- Maybe this is the same universe of discussion. But if so, we all see
- very different chunks of it. For example, 75% of the text in Robert
- Coover's sidebar (_Finding Your Way in Hypertext: A Guide to the
- Software_) described materials new to me. But I could write an equal
- amount about materials not mentioned there.
-
- Many people see aspects of hypertext that they want to use, develop, and
- promote for differing audiences. The NYT article covered book-like uses
- stressing fiction. Others see book-like uses stressing other forms of
- writing and other applications (reference or training) as well as
- non-book applications. Some people are working on remote single-site
- interactions, and others are working on multiple-site interactions.
-
- Others work on the content, the structure of the content, the property
- issues of content and incorporation of references, or seek the proper
- way to keep readers from feeling lost.
-
- All these discussions take place with only tiny overlaps. How ironic
- that the discussion of the rules of connectedness remains unconnected.
