- Lou Montulli writes
- : The University of Kansas has developed a distributed unix (and others)
- : hypertext package, for use in its Campus Wide Information System (CWIS).
- : This package is simalar to WWW in fuction, and related to Hyperrez in
- : document design. At this time there isn't an X windows version, but we're
- : working on it. There will also be a MS-DOS, MAC, and VMS version available
- : in the future. The hypertext reader, called Lynx, is also a nearly complete
- : gopher client as well. This software is currently in Beta test, but it
-
- I tried logging on but there seems to be a bug regarding vt220 terminals
- which your program didn't like. I had the same problem initially with
- gopher. Anyway, I got through a vt100 emulation. Works fine, feels
- just like Hytelnet. Familiar to us because we have been working on the
- same lines as yourselves, but in a much smaller scale, for a
- biocomputing package, and recently for an internet browser of biological
- databases.
-
- Seems as if the gopher and the wais interface in the telnet version
- I tried relies on executing an external call to gopher or swais
- rather than being built-into Lynx. Our modified version of the
- Hytelnet hypertext reader by Earl Fogel (unix port) is doing precisely
- this ie the call to an external command.
- Do you think it useful to incorporate gopher or wais into
- the Lynx code, or retain it as a separate client which Lynx can call.
-
- : can be obtained at the asking. If you would like to try out a sample
- Yes I will be interested in having a look at your program in detail.
- I liked the index, print and = options which you have in addition to
- the Hytelnet unix port features. Could you send me a copy? or say
- where to ftp from.
-
- : distributed hyper-base, telnet to acs5000.cc.ukans.edu and login as "info".
- : The controls are alot like Hyperrez. (Please don't sue:)
- Our version which is used for a biocomputing sequence analysis package
- GCG should be available by anonymous ftp at nuscc.nus.sg in /pub
- under the name gcgmenu.tar.Z by the end of this week.
- My colleague Derek Kiong who modified the Fogel code got permission
- from Earl Fogel to distribute the modified hypertext browser together
- with our database of documents.
