- The present semantics make some sense when you realize that one gopher
- instance (note that you can have multiple simultaneous gopher instances)
- inside of a PC Gopher session can have multiple text window or CSO window
- children all open simultaneously. Closing a *window* is consistent
- across window types.
-
- On the other hand, I also observe that most Gopher users have simply a
- single gopher instance and at most a single text window open at any one
- time. They seem to conceptualize a gopher session as a stack with several
- menus (poppable via "Back") then either a text window or a menu window at
- the "top" of the stack. Perhaps this is because of the small screen size
- (most people seem to use 25 line displays), perhaps it's the natural way
- people think, or perhaps it's because selecting a directory item in gopher
- REPLACES the current directory window rather than creating a new window.
- If you created a new directory window for each directory item selected,
- you could get rid of the "Back" menu item altogether, greatly simplifying
- the conceptual user interface. You might not even need the "New Gopher"
- item.
-
- By the way, why can't we resize menu/directory windows?
