Editing the Examples
The quickest way to get to grips with GridPro is to look at some of the
examples supplied with the program. Load GridPro (by double-clicking on the
!GridPro icon) and then open the Examples subdirectory.
DOT LATTICE
Open the DotLattice subdirectory and load the '10mm' file by double-clicking
on it. Two windows are opened: the design window and, below it, the data
window. Open the design window to full size and press the Home key to show
the whole of the dot pattern. Click on the object to select it. When it is
selected, a set of eight ears is displayed around the edges. In the toolbox
at the left hand side of the design window you will see that the Dot Lattice
icon (the sixth one up from the bottom) is also selected. The lattice can be
dragged to a new position (by pressing Select over the object and moving the
mouse). The size of the lattice can be changed by dragging any of the eight
handles with Select. The spacing between the dots does not change when the
lattice is rescaled in this way. Dragging the handles with Adjust, however,
changes both the size of the lattice and the dot spacing. You can abort a
dragging operation by pressing Escape.
Parameters
A number of changes can be made to the dot lattice using the options
available in the data window.
Rectangular/Skewed
The lattice can be skewed by clicking on the Skewed button and changing the
value in the degrees box. Any value in the range 20°-70° may be entered.
Click on Apply to apply the change.
Spacing
The horizontal spacing between the dots can be changed by altering the value
in the H box. The V value is grey at the moment. This means that the
vertical spacing is the same as the horizontal spacing. If you click on the
small button to the right of the Spacing boxes, you can enter a different
value for the V spacing. (Remember to click on Apply afterwards.)
Dot size
Clicking on the Dot size value opens a box. You can choose one of the six
preset sizes or enter your own size. Click on Set to confirm a change.
Colour
Clicking on the Colour rectangle opens a box which allows you to change the
colour of the dots. You can choose one of the 16 colours, enter RGB
percentage values, or drag the RGB sliders. Click on OK to use the colour.
Size and Position
Although the size and position of the object can be changed by dragging,
more precise changes are possible. Click on the Size/Position icon to show
the size and position values. The Position relates to the bottom left corner
of the object. Click on the i icon to display the previous parameters.
LINE GRID
Open the LineGrid subdirectory and load the '1cm_2divs' file. Select the grid
by clicking on it. It is likely that the lines will appear to be unequal in
width. This is due to screen resolution. If you press Menu over the window
and choose Reduce detail from the Display submenu (or press Ctrl R), the
lines will all be displayed with the same width. (This does not affect the
actual width of the lines.)
Parameters
You can toggle between the horizontal line parameters and vertical line
parameters by clicking on the appropriate icons. In this file, both sets of
lines have the same values.
Major and Minor Lines
There are two types of line, Major and Minor. If you change the colour of
the Minor lines (both horizontally and vertically), you will be able to see
them more easily. Try changing the number of Minor lines. If the lines are
too close together to distinguish one from another, increase the
magnification by pressing Page Up. You can also change the distance between
the Major lines, and the width of both Major and Minor lines. It is
difficult to determine suitable line widths by looking at a grid on screen.
It is best to print some files using different line widths (and colours)
before deciding which values are the most suitable for your requirements and
give the best results on your printer.
As subdivisions in line grids cannot be turned off, you have to cheat if you
want a grid with no subdivisions. The example file 1cm_square shows how this
is done. To create a 1cm grid, you set the Major lines to 2cm with 2 Minor
lines, and make both sets of lines the same width and colour.
Grid Types
Either the horizontal lines or the vertical lines can be turned off by
clicking on the None button. The Log button allows you to create logarithmic
grids and you can enter a cycle value to specify how many times the log
scale will be repeated.
Size and Position
The size and position of the grid can be specified in the same way as
explained above.
CHEQUER
Open the Chequer subdirectory and load the '1cm' file. Select the object by
clicking on it. A chequer pattern consists of a matrix of rectangles which
are alternately coloured.
Parameters
You can change the number of rectangles per row and column independently or,
by clicking on the button on the right of the H and V values, ensure that
both rows and columns have the same number. You can set the line and fill
colours and specify the width of both the lines and the surrounding border.
The border can be turned off by clicking on the Border button. Care must be
taken if you want to ensure that the rectangles are squares. If the H and V
numbers are changed, then the H and V sizes will also need to be altered so
that HSize/HNumber = VSize/VNumber.
TILED SPRITE
Open the TileSprite subdirectory and load the 'sprite1' file. Select the
object by clicking on it. This type of object consists simply of a single
sprite copied in a matrix. You can change the H and V scale. Decrease the
scale to increase the number of sprites and increase the scale to decrease
the number of sprites. You can also change the H and V sizes and positions.

POLAR GRID
Open the PolarGrid subdirectory and load the 'whole_1' file. Select the object
by clicking on it. Polar grids are the most complex objects provided by
GridPro.
Parameters
Grid type
A grid may be a complete circle, a complete sector, a hollow circle or a
hollow sector. As these terms are not completely satisfactory you should see
for yourself the differences between the four types.
Rings
Select Rings by clicking on the rings icon. The number of rings can be
changed by altering the Number value. There are two types of ring, Outer and
Inner. The width and colour of these rings may be changed as required. If no
rings are required, click on the on/off icon.
Spokes
Select Spokes by clicking on the spokes icon. The number of spokes can be
changed by altering the Number value. There are two types of spoke, Outer
and Inner. The width and colour of these spokes may be changed as required,
but note that Outer colour applies only to sectors. If no spokes are
required, click on the tick icon. Note that you cannot turn off both rings
and spokes.
Sector parameters
A sector may be orientated in any direction by specifying a Sector
direction. The angle of a sector is set by the Angle value.
Hollow parameters
You can set the size of the ‘hole’ in hollow circles and sectors by entering
a percentage value in the Inner box.
TESSELLATIONS
Open the Tessellate subdirectory and load the 'dod_hex_sq' file. Select the
object by clicking on it. Tessellations are similar to Tiled Sprites in that
a single object is copied in a matrix. Creating the object, however, can be
quite complicated. Further information on using the Tessellation facility is
given in Manual3. Note that this facility is not restricted to the creation
of true tessellations.
