- Subject: [*] GopherApp, Internet Gopher client
-
- >From "Readme.Access" document on Info Mac archive:
-
- The archives have recently been made available through
- the Gopher protocol, which provides many advantages over FTP.
- Primary is that the protocol is stateless, and connections do
- not have to be maintained while "browsing". ... Use of gopher
- for archive access is currently recommended above all other
- methods.
-
- GopherApp is one of several available Macintosh gopher clients
- that will let you browse and fetch files from Info Mac and other
- archives.
-
- Here are more of the details:
-
- GopherApp is an Internet information service program for
- Macintosh computers. It provides a Finder-like link to the range
- of Internet Gopher services.
-
- GopherApp is being written by Don Gilbert, using the MacApp
- extensible Macintosh programming framework from Apple Computer.
- It is actually a subset of a biosequence analysis program
- called SeqApp.
-
- To use GopherApp, your Mac must have a network connection to the
- Internet, and it must have MacTCP installed and operating (as
- with NCSA Telnet, Eudora, network news and similar MacTCP-based
- Internet programs). You can also use GopherApp over telephone lines
- when MacTCP has a SLIP interface and you dial-up to a Serial Line IP
- server.
-
- Comments, bug reports and suggestions for new features
- may be addressed via e-mail to

- which caused a button (Save System) to appear over top
- a field when it wasn't suppose to be there. I am suprised
- no one told me about it. Anyway this is the latest.
-
- For those of you who have never used HyperDecisionTree, it is a
- non-inferential expert system shell which allows an expert to
- create a decision tree of their knowledge and then save the
- decision tree as a separate stack in order to give to users in need
- of the expertise contained within the stack. The stack primarily
- serves as an overview of the decision tree, allowing the expert to

-
- I have hacked the NeXt Windows INIT, so that it works correctly under
- system 7. It turned out that there was some new window type(s) intro-
- duced in system 7, so some more case switches had to be added... It
- also fixes the problems (in some windows) with HyperCard 2.x and
- MacWrite II. I also added some new close and zoom icons. Unfortunately,
- these are only B&W bitmaps, and sometimes the old (drawn) icons come
- back on color screens. This is only a cosmetic problem, however. I
- have used the hacked INIT on my SE/30, my PowerBook 100, and a IIci at
- work with no problems (using system S-7.0) for 9 or 10 months. Under
- low memory conditions, the system sometimes will revert to the WDEF in
- ROM, but it does not seem to cause any harm.
-
- This Compact Pro archive includes source code in Think C. There is
- also code for a small application (Tester) that can be used to test any
- changes in the source code before you try to install it in your system.

- Pump and Snatch is an application which broadcasts the complete contents
- of a File, Directory or Disk across a LocalTalk network. As all the

- copying times. For instance, it is quite reasonable to expect to

-
- Hello net... net??
-
- We're on our way to acquire a flashy new Quadra 950 to use for multi-media.
- That's why we are going to put maximum memory (as we thought 256 Mb) and a
- really big disk (presumably a Maxtor 1.3 Gb) into it.
-
- But... a reseller (of memory chips, that is) told me that the Big Q supports 16
- Mb SIMMs in only three of the banks - bank A being the offender as I understood
- it. It was ** NOT ** a problem of space, as to him. I am aware that at least
- one bank (D?) requires low profile SIMMs. Our (mostly well informed :-) )
- Apple
- rep did not know anything of the kind; no service bulletin has been sent out
- this far. On the other hand; our friends in Cupertino doesn't support 16 Mb
- SIMMs - 'just' the old 4-banger - as if that should make a difference...
-
- Has anyone else heard anything in this direction? And by the way, is the Maxtor
- line-of-disk a good choice? I need a fast answer, our summer holiday is here
- and
- the decisions are harder to come by for every day.

- Subject: Aladdin & Alysis: miscommunication
-
- In Info-Mac 10-135, I posted a warning from Aladdin that the More Disk
- Space program from Alysis has a serious problem with StuffIt which causes
- loss of data. (StuffIt puts only part of the data into the archive because
- it gets incorrect information from the System about the size of the file it
- is archiving--the System returns the size of the MDS-compressed file, but
- MDS expands the file when feeding it to StuffIt, as it should do in order
- to be transparent.)
-
- Farokh Lam of Alysis responded in 10-136, in part, that:
-
- >This is not totally true. There is a problem between Stuffit Lite Beta and
- More
- >Disk Space compressed files, but we are not convinced that it is our "fault".
- >Compact Pro works just fine with More Disk Space compressed files.
- >
- >But we feel that users should have a choice between Stuffit Lite and Compact
- >Pro and have offered to work with Aladdin, before Stuffit Lite gets out of
- Beta
- >Testing, to determine who needs to make changes, and if we determine that we
- >have to, we will post a updater for More Disk Space on all online services.
-
- I've seen no further public comments by Aladdin, but over at the Alysis
- board on AOL there are several statements from Alysis personnel about how
- companies should work together, and how since the problem affects only a
- forthcoming version of StuffIt now in beta test it should have been solved
- between the two companies privately. There's also been a running argument
- among me and several MDS users over on Prodigy about this issue, with two
- people assuring me that the problem only affects the beta release of
- StuffIt--they were told so when they called Alysis technical support.
-
- The fact is that Alysis has simply misinterpreted Aladdin's note. Aladdin
- said that the version now in beta test recognizes the problem. Aladdin
- never said the problem was limited to the beta version. Alysis just assumed
- that. Both of the MDS users on Prodigy (at my request) tested the shareware
- 1.5.1 version of StuffIt by creating an archive using an MDS-compressed
- file and then unstuffing it. In each case, the archive was corrupted and
- the original file could not be recovered from the archive.
-
- Version 1.5.1 of StuffIt is distributed to all Mac subscribers to AOL. It's
- safe to assume that all subsequent versions of StuffIt and StuffIt Deluxe
- have this problem with MDS as well.
-
- Since this problem might cause a loss of data for a lot of people, Aladdin
- was certainly right to circulate a warning as it did. I'm sure that when
- Alysis recognizes the seriousness of the problem it will work harder to
- correct it. Until that's done, PLEASE be very cautious if you must use both
- programs together. Expand any MDS-compressed files before archiving and all
- will be well.
-
- Again, let me emphasize that I believe Alysis just misread the comments by
- Aladdin, and that its technical people are passing on what they believe to
- be true. They are NOT lying--they are simply wrong. Perhaps Alysis will now
- concentrate on fixing the problem and skip the questioning of Aladdin's
- motives for the nonce.

- >
- >Aladdin has posted a message stating that they have an intimate understanding

- Yes it's possible! However, you will also need a 'null modem' (swaps

-
- >Fedit Plus represents several thousand man-hours of work (no exaggeration) and
- is intended to be a source of income to the author and publisher - me! It is
- NOT shareware. It is not intended to be available on a try-before- you-buy

- >
- >Fedit, the predecessor to Fedit Plus, was first made available as shareware in
- September 1984, progressing up to version 3.05 in May 1985. During this time
- some 200 people registered - thank you very much, you pioneers. This was

-
- Most postscript printers come with Times as one of the fonts embedded in
- ROM (I don't know any printer with true Adobe postscript which doesn't come
- with Times). The Mac printing priorities are set up to always use the
- printer ROM postscript versions when available. So no matter what changes
- have been made in the TT Times font, the printout will always be the
- original postscript font.
-
- To get around that problem, just change the name of the TT Times font to
- something your printer doesn't have in ROM. Some programs identify fonts by

- renumber the font too. Generally just changing the name will work.

- On 6/15/92, Shaw Wu mentioned that I was wrong about
- MacWorld saying that the PLW LS could not be upgraded. He
- suggested I check my specific issues for "verification". Well
- I did. First let clarify myself: All (MacUser, MacWorld and my
- dealer) said that Apple would not be upgrading the LS. Next,
- I was reading the May 1991 issue of MacWorld. On page 149, at the
- bottom right corner the last paragraph on the page begins:
- "Still, choosing an LS means living with limitations. You can
- upgrade each PLP to a PostScript-based BLP for $999; no such
- upgrade will be offered for the LS." (MacWorld, 'Personal Page
- Printers Arrive," May 1991, Pg 149) As far as the differences
- between a n LS, NT, NTR and SC, I will aggree that there is not
- a lot of differences other than the controller board. The SC and
- the NT both had the 250 sheet tray. But since then Apple has gotten
- cheap and you have to pay extra for it (or was it built into the
- price of the NT and SC). The box is almost identical. The only
- really difference is the type of controller board. The LS has a
- different type of board than the others. That is why it cannot be
- upgrade with an Apple upgrade. All others (making an assumption
- about the NTR since have not seen it "in person", only a picture
- of the rear in MacUser) have a board that sides into that back of
- the printer and is held in by two screws. Therefore, to upgrade
- the SC or the NT to an NTR all one has to do is to unscrew the
- two screws and slide the old board out. Then slide the new
- board in and re-screw the screws. Theoretically, when you buy
- one of these printers (or an upgrade) an autorized technician
- is supposed to do this. But, when I got my SC I had to install
- the board myself. By the way, for those of you who are interested
- the list price of the upgrade is $1299. I have not be able to get
- a "dealer" price since the dealer didn't even know that the upgrade
- exisited. But my guess is you should be able to get it for about
- $1000. Dealer's usually sell their products at 20% to 30% off the

-
- Superpaint 2.0 dies a horrible death on a Mac IIci running system
- 6.0.8 with a Radius Full Page Display (16 gray scale) attached to
- the on-board video and an Apple 13" RGB (256 colors) connected
- through a Radius Direct Color/GX card. The monitors are configured
- so that the Apple monitor is the startup monitor, and holds
- the menu bar. Superpaint opens, show the Tool windows, opens
- and Untitled window, and dies. (cannot recover through MacsBug,

-
- There is a workaround -- set the startup window to be the FPD,

- Superpaint window onto the 13" screen causes sudden death.
-
- Is this fixed in SP 3.0?

- If you like to hack a little, it is quite easy to do this with HyperCard.
- HyperCard can read a file of any length, provided only that you do not
- read to much of it at a time. As long as the file is open for reading,
- the file pointer will be advanced for each reading. As long as you do
- not want to go back and forth in the file, you can read a suitable amount
- for reading and editing, write out the edited portion, and read in the
- next "chunk".
-
- Of course, I cannot *guarantee* that this will work, since I have not
- tried to do anyting with such a large file myself, but since the tech-
- nique only relies on the basic Mac file system, I see no reason that
- it would'nt work. If you have problems doing anything with HyperCard
- yourself, drop me a line and will try to do something as outlined above
- (however, my e-mail connection will be a little shaky the next few weeks,
- so I cannot guarantee an immediate response).

- I am interested in 24 bit video cards to be used with the Apple
- 13" RGB monitor and Mac IIcis, and would like to hear from netters with
- relevant
- experience. I'll summarize for the net if there is sufficient response:
-
- 1. Of the "less expensive" ($500-600 or hopefully, less) 24 bit cards (e.g.
- Micron Macrocolor II, RasterOps 24si, Radius Directcolr/GX, etc.) are there
- any clear favorites? What about their various special features (hardware
- pan/zoom, etc.)
-
- 2. I recently discovered that the neat shareware screen expander program
- MaxAppleZoom 1.43 works in 24 bit mode with an Apple 8.24 card (this contrary
- to the MAZ documentation which says it only works with Apple 8-bit cards). This
- is a nice feature--your monitor increases in size by about 1 diagonal inch. Do
- any of the other cards either have the feature in their hardware/software or
- work with MAZ? MAZ is almost enough reason to buy the Apple product, since
- redraw speed is not that much of a problem on the 13" monitor (despite the Mac
- magazines' flurry of reviews of accelerated video boards costing $1-3K).
-
- 3. At my lab we have some Apple 4.8 cards with sockets for additional VRAM to
- upgrade them to 24 bit capability (as described in Larry Pina's new book "Mac
- II Repair and Upgrade Secrets"). But so far, I have only found one non-Apple
- source for the VRAM SIMMs--Maya Computer--who want $197 for the required two
- 256k modules. Are there any cheaper equivalent modules out there?
