- MISSION OBJECTIVE

- The inevitable moment came one afternoon. A couple of new students were on
- patrol in the F-104s, and radioed back that they had encountered a wing of
- MiG-21s and were fleeing back to base. I ordered the base defenses warmed up
- as we finished prepping the Su-33s.
-
- "Call Bear in from patrol. If things get nasty, the MiG-29 will be a great
- help. Let's get going!"
-
- Then...

- I took off and banked over to the east. As soon as the radar came on-line, I
- saw that we were in a world of hurt.
-
- "Oh, shit...Eagle to Base! We've got about the whole goddamn Russian
- airforce converging on our position. Greenie and Mama's Boy are on full
- afterburners, but I'm not sure they'll make it. See if you can call in any
- back-up. Popcorn, get your Ukrainian butt up here as fast as you can!"
-
- As I hit the afterburners again, Base radioed up, "Eagle, some F-22s are
- being diverted. Hold out until they get here."
-
- "Roger, Base. I've got some slow bogeys that I think are bombers. Keep a
- lookout. Eagle out."

- MISSION SUCCESS

- The F-22s touched down with beautiful precision and taxied over to the
- marshaling area. The canopies raised in unison, and the exhausted pilots
- clambered out to the waiting ladders.
-
- "Thanks for the help, boys. I've pulled so many g's today I feel like I lost
- a fight with Bear here."
-
- "No problem, Colonel," one pilot said. His eyes were bloodshot from a
- particularly nasty maneuver. "We were just on our way for a boring armed
- recon anyway. Gotta spare john and maybe some go-juice?"
-
- "Yeah, Finny over here will top your birds off. Any damage? We don't have
- many parts that will fit something from this century."
-
- "Nah, we're ok to get back home. We'll run a preflight just to be sure."
-
- "Natch." We started back to the hanger. "Where are you guys based out of?"
-
- "Actually, we're on the Ike, but were sent on a recon out of Ivana." He
- looked at my somewhat non-standard flightsuit, "And you?"
-
- "I'm kind of informally here."
-
- One pilot glanced at the other, then back at me with a disgusted face,
- "Merc?"
-
- I had to say yes.
-
- They took off a little later without having said another word to me. Its
- hard to be a good guy, sometimes.

- MISSION FAILURE

- Boss is sad to see you go. What is left of you could not fit into a tiny
- container. The base is completely destroyed , everybody's dead. Nothing but
- rubble is left. Your loss is mourned by no one since nobody even knows you
- are here. High Command is dissappointed, disgusted, and sorry to lose such a
- well positioned Air Base.
