- MISSION OBJECTIVE

- .body
- "Eagle, the Ukrainian government is running very short on replacement parts
- for its Russian planes. Since they can't vary well order more from Moscow,
- we have decided on a bold move.
-
- "With the Russians firmly entrenched in eastern Kiev, they have brought in
- supplies to the airbase there. The base is heavily defended, but a Special
- Forces group, backed up by air support and heavy metal, thinks they can get
- in, raid the place, load the supplies on waiting C-130's, and get out before
- the Russian ground troops can react.
-
- "This will be finely timed with other units, so study the briefing map
- closely. A wing of F-14's based on the Ike will engage any airborne patrols
- and protect the base from scrambled fighters. A wing of F/A-18s from the
- north will be on a weasel hunt, and should take care of most of the defenses
- before you get there. Soldiers on the ground will engage Russian troops and
- armor backed up by main battle tanks and BTR's. Your job will be to take out
- the armor. With all the action and jamming, if you drop low after crossing
- the ridge and keep your radiation low, you should be able to get in and do
- some damage before anyone has time to concentrate on you.
-
- "This will be an expensive operation, son, both in materiel and lives. It is
- crucial to the war effort that Ukraine has operational birds. Don't let me
- down. Out."
-
- "Bear, let's load up the A-7's with Mavericks where we can and Mk 82's on the
- extra hardpoints. AIM-9M's on the tips will have to be sufficient for
- air-to-air."
-
- "Sounds like a bad one, Colonel."
-
- "They're all bad, Bear."

- MISSION SUCCESS
- .left
- .body
- When the turbines finally wound down, I was able to get up the strength to
- pull myself out of the cockpit. The ground crew had heard the chatter, so
- they knew how it had been.
-
- "Like losing a fight with a buzz saw," I said.
-
- "Like losing a fight with Uncle Andropov," said Bear.
-
- "At least we got them the base. Jesus, I hope it was worth the cost. Did
- you see any of the ground action?"
-
- "Yeah. At least if you bite in a plane, its with clean clothes and a good
- meal in your belly."
-
- "The transports coming. Let's hustle. Popcorn, come with us. We have a
- mission that just might make your day."
-
- We climbed to the top of a hill, attached the harnesses and zip lines, and
- released the three balloons. Popcorn and Bear looked at me nervously as they
- walked to put space between us. "Just like a carnival ride, boys." The
- sound of the approaching pick up made my stomach do flips too, but they would
- never know. "Uncle Sam doesn't even charge admission."

- MISSION FAILURE
- .left
- .body
- This mission was the bloodiest one yet. The grunts took it on the chin in
- this one. Unfortunately you are just another statistic. The supplies were
- not captured. With no money and no planes the outlook is dim for the
- Ukrainians.
