This document describes the installation of AportisDoc Reader on Windows and Macintosh computers. While the contents of the downloaded archive contains a number of files, AportisDoc installation requires two items be installed:
1) AportisDoc.prc
2) ADocR Reference.pdb
The two items above are supplied in a Zip or StuffIt archive. Regardless of the desktop computer you are using, use your favorite expansion tool and decompress all files to the desktop. If you are unsure how to expand files, refer to your compression software User's Guide or see the Aportis Customer Care FAQ at http://www.aportis.com.
System Requirements
-------------------
While AportisDoc Reader will work with any Palm Computing Platform device, we highly recommend the use of current versions of Palm OS and Windows or Macintosh 3Com software.
Our observations in the month of February, 1998 showed that Pilot 1000 and 5000 owners should be using at least Palm OS 1.0.6 Update (handheld-side) and, for Windows owners, at least HotSync 1.1.8 or, for Macintosh users, Conduit Manager 1.01. The same observations showed that PalmPilot Personal, PalmPilot Professional, IBM WorkPad and other Palm Computing Platform device owners should install the latest updates, using at least Palm OS 2.0.4 Update (handheld-side) and, for Windows owners, at least Desktop 2.1 or, for Macintosh users, Conduit Manager 1.01.
You'll find all current Palm Computing Platform updates at:
http://www.3com.com/palm/custsupp/upgrade.html
Additionally, be aware that Freeware software like HackMaster, AlarmHack, LaunchPad, and a few others are known to modify the Palm Computing Platform device's memory in order to increase the usefulness of your handheld.
Unfortunately, these product can often fragment your handheld's memory to the point where you cannot install AportisDoc even though there is apparently enough free memory on your device. AportisDoc requires contiguous memory for installation. You will know if this applies to you if the Memory application states you have sufficient space, but AportisDoc will still not install.
If you are using these software products, you MUST uninstall their "Hacks" and reset your Palm Computing Platform device. With HackMaster, simply tap the "Uninstall All" button and then tap "Reset". With LaunchPad, turn off the "Always use LaunchPad" item then choose "Warm Reset." For other software, consult the documentation for disabling any hacks that are preventing AportisDoc from being installed.
