  3. StrEd is a brief utility for changing the names of the WarCraft II units.
  4. It was written by me, Daniel Lemberg. You can contact me by e-mail at

  8. * Using StrEd
  9.  
  10. Put stred.exe in your WarCraft II directory.
  11.  
  12. To dump all the unit names from WarCraft II, redirect the output of stred
  13. to a file, like so: "stred > filename".
  14.  
  15. Edit the file. Make sure that you don't insert or delete lines, not even
  16. the blank lines.

  18. When you are finished, run "stred filename" to put your new names into
  19. WarCraft II.

  21. * Error messages
  22.  
  23. Error opening filename: This is message is displayed when StrEd can't find
  24. data\strdat.war (i.e. you didn't put StrEd in your WarCraft II directory),
  25. or you pass a non-existant file to StrEd as an argument.

  27. Names too long: You can't use more than 1145 characters for all your names.
  28. Shorten one or two of your names and try again.

  30. Not enough names: You don't have a line for each unit type. You need exactly
  31. 104 lines in your file.

  33. * Notes

  35. You should keep a copy of the original unit names, so that you can restore
  36. them. Otherwise, you will have to reinstall WarCraft II to return your unit
  37. names to normal.

  39. StrEd doesn't change the "Build peon" etc text, just the unit names displayed
  40. when you click on a unit. It is most useful for changing hero names.
