- WHAT IS MESSENGER?
-
- Messenger is a tagline manager that works with many popular mail
- readers to give you extra power in selecting and editing taglines
- for your messages. In addition, it allows you to organize your
- taglines alphabetically into different categories or files, check
- for duplicates, and easily import and export taglines.
- Messenger's pull down menus, command buttons, and scroll bars
- contribute to a friendly, easy to use program.
-
-
-
-
-

- INSTALLATION
- ============
-
- The Messenger V1.1 install program allows you to perform either a
- complete installation or upgrade from version 1.0 to version 1.1.
-
- From the directory containing the original Messenger program and
- data files, type INSTALL. You will have the option to INSTALL a
- new copy, UPGRADE from version 1.0 to version 1.1, or CANCEL and
- quit the install program.
-
- WARNING: If you choose a new installation when you are already
- running an existing copy of messenger, YOUR EXISTING TAGLINES
- CATEGORY FILES WILL BE LOST. Make sure to use the UPGRADE option
- instead. When upgrading it is always prudent to back up all
- files in your tagline directory (C:\MSNG\TAGS\).
-
-
- A NEW INSTALLATION
- You will be asked to enter a directory in which to install
- Messenger. The install program offers the default directory of
- C:\MSNG\. However, you may change it to any valid directory
- name. You may cancel installation any time up to when the
- actual files are copied by selecting the CANCEL command button.
-
- NOTE: Messenger should be installed on the same drive as your
- mail reader.
-
- Next, you'll be asked to enter a directory for your Messenger
- tagline files. By default the subdirectory TAGS\ will be
- attached to your main program director, for example,
- C:\MSNG\TAGS\.
-
- The install program will confirm that you want these directories
- and notify you that the file MSNG.CFG will be created in your
- root directory.
-
- Select CONTINUE and the install program will now create the
- necessary directories if they do not already exist and copy or
- create the Messenger program and data files into these
- directories.
-
- After Messenger is installed, you will still need to configure
- your mail reader to recognize it. However, you may go ahead and
- run Messenger now and configure your mail reader later.

- UPGRADING A PREVIOUS VERSION
- Select the command button "Upgrade" to upgrade Messenger from a
- previous version. The install program will ask where your
- existing version of Messenger is located. Enter the path and
- select "Continue". You may use the command button "Back up" to
- return to the previous screen or "Cancel" to cancel your upgrade.
-
- If you have entered Messenger's proper path, the install program
- will display the current version and give you one last chance to
- cancel or back up. Select "Continue" once again to upgrade
- Messenger.
-
-
-
- STARTING THE PROGRAM
- To load and run Messenger change your directory to C:\MSNG> or
- whatever you have named your directory. Then simply type MSNG
- to load.
-
-
- If you get the error message "File not found in module MSNG",
- then the file "MSNG.CFG" was not found in the root directory of
- your current drive. If your mail reader is on a different drive
- or you want to load Messenger from a different drive, simply copy
- the file "MSNG.CFG" from Messenger's root directory to your
- current drive's root directory.

- MAIN SCREEN
- ===========
-
- When you load and run Messenger, the main screen appears unless
- the special Messenger Tithe screen is activated, see Tithe Screen
- for more information. The main screen consists of the following
- objects: the main menu bar at the top, status bar, tagline
- window, scroll bar, and command buttons. All of the objects on
- main screen except for the status bar are activated with the
- mouse. In addition, the menu bar and command buttons are also
- activated by pressing a combination of the ALT and a highlighted
- key.
-
-
-
- TAGLINE WINDOW
- Up to fourteen taglines are displayed in the tagline window at
- one time, one of which is the current or active tagline. The
- current tagline is the one that is highlighted or under the
- selection bar. There are two ways to change the current tagline.
- 1) Move the selection bar either by clicking your mouse on the
- desired tagline or using the [-] and [+] keys to move up and
- down, or 2) scroll the taglines under the selection bar by using
- the scroll bar, the [Page Up] and [Page Down] keys, the cursor
- keys, and the [Home] and [End] keys.
-
-
- SCROLL BAR
- Located on the far right of the main screen is the scroll bar.
- Clicking on either arrow at the top or bottom of the scroll bar
- increases or decreases the tagline window by one and moves the
- scroll box along the scroll bar. Clicking above or below the
- scroll box increases or decreases the screen by one screen
- length, fourteen taglines. Dragging the scroll box with your
- mouse quickly moves you through the current tagline file.
-
-
-
- STATUS BAR
- The status bar is located just above the tagline window. The
- status bar displays the following information.
-
- * Current Category
- * Sort Status
- * Current Record Position
- * Number of Taglines
- * Total File Size (including blank records)

-
- When sort is turned on, the status bar displays S:ON and when
- turned off S:OFF. The last numbers on the status bar are the
- number of taglines in the current category and the total file
- size. The number of blank records is reflected by the difference
- between these two numbers.
-
-
-
- COMMAND BUTTONS
- ---------------
- Three command buttons are visible on the bottom right of the main
- screen when Messenger is first started. These are the category
- command buttons. Other buttons will also appear when you use the
- Search function, see Search. To use a command button simply
- click on it with your mouse or TAB over to it and press ENTER.
-
-
-
- CATEGORY BUTTONS
- Pressing the center button labeled, "Category" displays a list of
- all the categories currently in use. To change your current
- category, use your mouse or up and down cursor keys to scroll
- through the category list and then either double click your mouse
- or press enter on the desired category. To quickly move through
- the category list, simply press the first letter of a desired
- category and the list will jump to the first category starting
- will that letter. This feature is especially helpful when you
- have many categories.
-
- To move down or up one category use the "<---" and "--->" command
- buttons. These buttons are activated either with a mouse click
- or by pressing SHIFT < or SHIFT >.

- THE TAGLINE TITHE SCREEN
- While Messenger is unregistered it displays the special tagline

- registration reminder along with a randomly selected Messenger
- promotional tagline.
-
- At the bottom of the tithe screen are two command buttons. Use
- the first button, ACCEPT TAGLINE to add the promotional tagline
- to your message.
-
- Sometimes you may want to add just the right tagline to help
- punctuate your important message. In this case, use the second
- button labeled, EXIT TO MESSENGER to exit to the main screen.
- This delays the tithe screen until the next time you run
- Messenger.

- In order to move taglines from one category to another or specify
- taglines for export, they must first be marked. To mark the
- tagline under the selection bar, choose MARK from the main menu
- bar and then "Mark Tagline", or a faster and more convenient way
- is to use the quick-key M from the main menu. The greater than
- symbol ">" appears to the left of marked taglines. To unmark a
- tagline press M again or select "Mark Tagline" from the menu and
- the mark will toggle off.
-
-
-
- MARK PAGE
- You can toggle the marks for all the taglines on the screen by
- selecting MARK from the main menu and then "Mark Page" or by
- simply pressing CTL-M. All taglines on the screen will toggle
- on and off relative to the selection bar. In other words, even
- though some taglines on the screen may be marked and others may
- not, all taglines will be toggled on or off in relation to the
- tagline currently under the selection bar.
-
-
-
- MARKING FOR DELETION
- Messenger allows you mark taglines for later deletion. This
- feature is especially helpful when dealing with large files where
- deleting individual taglines is time consuming. To delete the
- taglines after marking for deletion, see Delete Marked Tags.
-
- To mark a tagline for deletion select MARK from the main menu and
- then "Mark for Deletion" or use the quick-key <D>. A minus sign
- "-" appears preceding taglines that are marked for deletion. To
- remove a deletion mark re-select "Mark for Deletion" or press <D>
- to toggle the mark off.

- PACK FILE
- When you delete individual taglines or groups of marked and
- duplicate taglines, unaccessible blank records are placed at the

- blank records will take up disk space. Packing the category

- To pack the current category file, select "Pack" from the DELETE

- SEARCH
- ------
- Search not only allows you to find that perfect tagline for your
- message but is also a power tool for organizing your taglines.
- Since so many categories share a common word or a few common
- words, you can search, mark, and transfer the desired taglines in
- just a few easy step.
-
- You can search forward and backward through category files to
- match keywords. There is also a mark command button that
- automatically marks the current match and continues the keyword
- search. Messenger provides both single and multiple keyword
- searches.
-
- Select SEARCH from the main menu bar or press Alt-S to display
- the search functions. The command buttons FORWARD, BACKWARD,
- MARK, SRCH LIST, and EXIT along with the search entry text box
- will appear at the bottom of the main screen.
-
- To perform a single keyword search, make sure the option button
- at the bottom right of the main screen is set to "single".
-
- (*) Single
- ( ) List
-
- Now enter your keyword in the search entry text box and press
- FORWARD to search forward from the tagline currently under the
- selection bar or press BACKWARD to search backward. Messenger
- will check every tagline until it finds a match of the keyword.
- If no match is found, Messenger asks if you want to search the
- next category when performing forward searches or the previous
- category on backward searches.
-
- WHAT MESSENGER LOOKS FOR WHEN SEARCHING
- When you enter a keyword, Messenger looks for the first
- occurrence in the tagline. The following keyword variations
- result in the corresponding match. The match is capitalized and
- underlined.
-
- Keyword: man
- ... Messenger, a tagline MANager every woman and man should use!
- ---
- Keyword: man ;
- ... Messenger, a tagline manager every woMAN and man should use!

- To have your keyword end with a space enter a space followed by a
- semicolon. Messenger ignores the semicolon at the end of
- keywords. To find only the keyword itself and not imbedded
- occurrences, like in the third example, put a space before the
- keyword then after followed by a semicolon.
-
-
- MARK BUTTON
- Use the MARK button to mark the current tagline and then continue
- your keyword search. This button saves you the extra keystroke
- required to mark the current tagline and continue your forward or
- backward search. After going through the entire current
- category, you may then choose to move the marked taglines.
-
-
- SEARCH LISTS
- Messenger allows multiple keyword searches by the means of search
- lists. For all practical purposes the number of keywords that is
- allowed in a list is limited only by your computer's memory
- although the maximum is 32,767, many more than you will ever
- need. It's important to note that the more keywords that are in
- a search list, the longer it takes to perform a keyword search.
-
- As you import new taglines and move them to their respective
- categories, it becomes obvious that the same keywords are
- repeatedly used for each category. A category named "cat" may
- have the keywords, "cat, kitten, feline, and purr", or a category
- such as "sports" could contain keywords like "ball, golf, score,
- tennis, and run". Instead of entering these same keywords each
- time you categorize any newly imported taglines, you can save a
- search list for each category and reload it when needed.
-
-
- CREATING A SEARCH LIST
- To create a search list select SEARCH from the main menu bar.
- When the search command buttons appear at the bottom of the
- screen, select SRCH LIST to bring up the search list screen.
- The search list screen consists of the text box , the list box,
- the heading, and the command buttons.
-
- When the search list screen is first activated, the current or
- active search list has the heading UNTITLED located above the
- list box. This search list is temporary and any keywords you

- unalphabetized. To delete a keyword from the list box, click on
- or TAB to the list box and highlight the desired keyword. Then
- select the command button DELETE.
-
- Click on the command button labeled HEADING to associate a
- heading to the current search list. When the category list
- appears, select a category for the heading. To save your search
- list simply select the SAVE button. As long as a search list has
- a heading, it can be saved, even blank search lists.
-
- Select LOAD to load in a saved search list. The command buttons
- "<--" and "-->" load in the search lists preceding and following
- the current one.
-
- Use the CLEAR option to clear all keywords from the list box.
- Clearing the list box does not, however, clear the current search
- list. To clear a search list: load in the desired search list,
- select CLEAR to clear the list box, and then select SAVE to save

- Use the command button NEW to reset the search list to UNTITLED.
- Remember to save your exiting search list if needed.

-
- Messenger provides you with several tools for organizing your
- taglines including creating and maintaining category file areas,
- moving taglines from one category to another, moving entire
- categories, alphabetizing your tagline files, and checking for
- duplicates.
-
-
-
- SORT ON/OFF
- When you enter, change, or move taglines they are normally
- automatically sorted alphabetically. Sometimes you may want to
- turn off this sorting function such as when you are dealing with
- a large category file and you have many taglines to add or
- change. It is usually quicker to make your additions and changes
- and then use the alphabetization function when dealing with large
- category files.
-
- The sort function defaults to the "ON" position when Messenger is
- started. To turn the sort function off select ORGANIZE, then
- "Sort" and then "No". To turn it back on select ORGANIZE then
- "Sort" and then "Yes".
-
-
- MOVING TAGLINES FROM ONE CATEGORY TO ANOTHER
- To move taglines from the current category to another, you must
- first mark which taglines you want moved by using the MARK
- function, see Mark Taglines. Next, select "Move Taglines" from
- the ORGANIZE menu, and the category list will appear. Then
- select a destination category, or select CANCEL to abort the
- operation.

-
- After a destination category is selected, a dialogue box appears
- reporting how many marked taglines are found as Messenger
- searches through the current category. As taglines are moved
- from a category, the remaining taglines are moved down so that
- the category file only contains blank records at the end of the
- file. You may choose to remove these blanks records using the
- PACK command if a large number of them are created.
-
-
-
- MOVING AN ENTIRE CATEGORY
- To transfer all the taglines from your current category to
- another category, go to the ORGANIZE menu and select, "Move
- Entire Category". When the category list box appears, select a
- destination category. Messenger will confirm that you want to
- move the current category into the selected destination category.
- As the taglines are moved, they are alphabetized into the
- destination category unless Sort is set off. When sort is turned
- off, taglines are added to the end of the tagline file.
-
-
-
- ALPHABETIZE
- To alphabetize the current category select ORGANIZE from the main
- menu bar and then "Alphabetize". A dialogue box will appear
- displaying Messenger's progress. Large files are alphabetized in
- small batches depending on the buffer setting on the configure
- screen, see Config screen and buffer setting.

- MANAGING CATEGORIES
- When you install Messenger it has six categories, one for the
- special Messenger taglines, one for new imported taglines, one
- for new checked taglines, two for miscellaneous taglines, and one
- for your own original taglines. You are not limited to just
- these six categories or their names. You may add new categories,
- change a category's name, or delete a category all together.
- However, the Messenger, New Imported, and New Checked categories
- cannot be deleted or changed.
-
-
-
- ADDING CATEGORIES
- You can add more categories by selecting "Add New Category" from
- the ORGANIZE menu. The category list box will appear with the
- buttons, ADD and CANCEL at the top. Select ADD, and a dialogue
- box will appear. Just enter your new category and press ENTER.
- Your new category will be placed in alphabetical order in the
- category list box.
-
-
-
- CHANGE CATEGORY NAME
- To change a category's name select ORGANIZE from the main menu
- bar and then "Change Category Name". When the category list box
- appears, select a category to change and the dialogue box will
- come up. Change the category name and press ENTER or select the
- OK button to accept or select the CANCEL button to abort. The
- category will be re-alphabetized in the category list box.
-
-
- DELETE CATEGORY
- Before deleting a category, you should move any taglines you want
- into another category. ONCE YOU HAVE DELETED A CATEGORY ALL
- TAGLINES ARE GONE AND CANNOT BE RECOVERED.
-
- To delete a category select "Delete Category" from the ORGANIZE
- menu. Then select your desired category from the category list
- box. You will be asked to confirm that you want to delete your
- selected category.

- CHECK DUPES
- -----------
- It's important to know a little about how Messenger checks for
- duplicate taglines. First, this version of Messenger can only
- check for duplicates in category files that are alphabetized.
- The time required to check unalphabetized files is impractical
- when dealing with many category files. Future versions could
- include a limited function for checking unalphabetized files if
- user demand is great enough.
-
- It's also important to note that the duplicate taglines are not
- removed or deleted during the dupe-check process. Duplicate
- taglines are preceded with a : (colon) and have to be deleted
- after leaving the dupe-check screen with the "Delete Dupes"
- function found under DELETE on the menu bar. You will be able
- to see the duplicate taglines and have the option keeping any
- duplicate taglines desired.
-
- Finally, Messenger checks for many close matches, not just exact
- duplicates. Messenger ignores spacing, case, and most
- punctuation. The following taglines will report as duplicates:
-
- Messenger V1.1, the ultimate tagline manager.
- Messenger V1.1, the ultimate tagline manager!!!!!
- messenger v1.1, the ULTIMATE tagline manager.
- Messenger V11 the ultimate tagline manager
- Messenger V1.1, the ultimate tagline manager.
-
-
-
- ACTIVATING THE DUPE-CHECK SCREEN
- To make the dupe-check screen appear select "Check Dupes" from
- the ORGANIZE menu. The dupe-check screen consists of five parts
- 1) the method settings, 2) the functions, 3) the category scope,
- 4) the display, and 5) the command buttons.
-
-
- THE CHECK BY TAGLINE METHOD
- There are two different methods of checking for duplicate
- taglines. The first method, CHECK BY TAGLINE checks each tagline
- in your "Category to Check" (source category) against all other
- categories for duplicates. When using this method, the "Check
- Against" setting always switches to "All Files". The advantage
- of this method is that you can check only part of the taglines in
- your source category and move those checked taglines to another
- category.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- The Messenger Tagline Manager
-
- - 22 -
-
-
-
- Messenger is designed so you can to use this method to check for
- duplicate taglines in the category "--New Imported Tags--" and
- then move the taglines to "--New Tags Checked--". Later you can
- move the checked taglines into their new respective categories
- knowing that they are free from duplicates. You are not limited
- to this strategy though. The move option allows the checked
- taglines to be moved into any other category except the Messenger
- tagline area.
-
-
- THE CHECK BY CATEGORY METHOD
- The second and overall faster method, "CHECK BY CATEGORY" checks
- all taglines in your source category against those in each other
- category before moving on to the next category. The disadvantage
- of this method is that you cannot check part of your source
- category against all other categories. Canceling the dupe-check
- leaves your entire source category unchecked against the
- remaining categories.
-
- Messenger uses this method when you change your "Check Against"
- setting to a single category. This method is useful when you
- import taglines that primarily cover the same topic as one of
- your existing categories, for example, after importing a file
- containing mostly cat related taglines, you check for duplicates
- against your category labeled, "Cat".
-
-
- CATEGORY SETTINGS
- In order to check for duplicate taglines, you need to provide
- Messenger with a category to check, the category or categories to
- check against, and an optional category to move the checked
- taglines into when using the Check by Tagline method.
-
- When the dupe-check screen is loaded, the current category
- appears in the "Category to Check" box. The "Check Against" and
- "Move to" categories are whatever was last saved. To change the
- "Category to Check" box, click the command button directly to the
- right for the category list to appear. Select your new category.
-
-
- CHECK AGAINST SETTING
- Use the command button to the right of the "Check Against" box to
- change its setting. Notice that when the category list box is
- activated that the command button "All Files" appears above the
- list box. Click this button to change your scope to include all
- of the categories.

- MOVE TAGLINES
- The move taglines option can only be used with the Check by
- Tagline method. This option is disabled when you check by
- category. When you activate this option, the checked taglines
- are transferred to the "Move To" category. Canceling the dupe-
- check results in only those taglines that were checked being
- moved.
-
-
- COMMAND BUTTONS
- There are three command buttons on the dupe-check screen, BEGIN,
- SAVE SETTINGS, and EXIT. Press BEGIN to start checking for
- duplicate taglines. The other commands buttons disappear and
- the label on the remaining button changes to CANCEL. Press
- CANCEL to stop the duplication check at any time.
-
- Select SAVE SETTINGS to save your current settings. Next time
- you activate the dupe-check screen the method, move option, Check
- Against category, and Move To category will be where you set
- them. Select the EXIT command button to return to the main
- screen.
-
-
- THE DISPLAY
- The dupe-check display is located at the bottom of the screen.
- It shows the total number of taglines to check, the record or
- tagline number currently being checked, the number of duplicates
- found, the current tagline being checked, and the current
- category being checked against. Messenger allows you to turn
- off the current tagline and category display by unchecking the

- FILE
- ---- ---------------
- : Import :
- : Export :
- ---------------
- Messenger allows you to import ASCII text files into any of the
- category file areas. This function is extremely convenient with
- mail readers such as Blue Wave where taglines are adopted into an
- ASCII text file. Messenger also has many powerful features for
- creating ASCII text export files.
-
-
- IMPORT
- To activate the import screen select FILE from the main menu bar
- and then "Import" or from the main screen press [Ctrl+I]. The
- import screen is divided into three areas: file name, import
- settings, and category selection.
-
- Before you can import taglines, you must first specify an import
- file and category. Messenger has optional settings to delete the
- import file and to import only taglines starting with specified
- characters.
-
- CHOOSING A FILE NAME
- Often times when you import taglines into Messenger, you will be
- getting them from the same file, such as the Blue Wave mail
- reader adoption file. By setting the default import file name
- from the CONFIG screen, the same file name will appear in the
- file text box every time you activate the import screen. If your
- mail reader is capable of stealing/adopting taglines into an
- ASCII text file, you should set the default import file name to
- the same name your mail reader uses for taglines.
-
- To set a new file name, use your mouse to click on a drive,
- directory, and file name. The path and file name will be
- displayed in the file name text box.
-
-
- CHOOSING A CATEGORY
- The default import category is NEW TAGLINES when the import
- screen is activated. To change categories simply click on the
- category button and choose a new category.
-
-
- DELETING THE TEXT FILE
- You can automatically delete the import text file by placing a
- check in the check box, "Delete Text File". After the text file
- has been imported, the file is erased.

- enter a file name, set the scope (tell Messenger which taglines
- to export), and set up the format of your export file. Then
- simply click on the WRITE command button to write the file.
-
-
- PATH AND FILE NAME
- Enter the path and export file name in the directory text box.
- You may use the drive, directory, and file list boxes to find and
- select an existing file. When you choose an existing file name,
- Messenger will confirm that you want to overwrite it.
-
-
- APPENDING TAGLINES TO MESSAGE
- Check the option, "Append Taglines to Message" to have your
- export list added to the end of your current message. The file
- name is automatically set to the export tagline file name defined
- in Messenger's Config screen. This option is only available when
- your mail reader calls up its editor through Messenger.
-
-
- SETTING THE SCOPE
- Messenger allows you export taglines according to the following
- criteria.
-
- * All taglines in a single or multiple areas.
- * Marked taglines in a single or multiple areas
- * All taglines that match a keyword(s) in a single or
- multiple areas.
-
-
- To export all of the taglines in an area press the "Add Category"
- command button to bring up the category list box. After you have
- selected an area, that area will be shown in the export list box.
- You can add as many areas as you desire. To remove an area from
- the export list box, highlight the desired area and select the
- "Delete Category" command button.
-
-
- EXPORTING MARKED TAGLINES ONLY
- To export only the marked taglines in an area, double click on
- that category name when it is listed in the export list box.
- Double clicking on the name again turns the "export marked"
- option off and all taglines in that category will once again be
- exported.

-
-
- EXPORT FILE FORMAT
- Messenger has several functions to change the appearance of your
- export file including adding a header, displaying the scope data,
- spacing between taglines, grouping taglines, and adding a prefix
- before taglines. These functions will make your taglines more
- pleasant to view when posting multiple taglines such as in the

-
- Scope Data
- By activating the check box, "Display Scope Data" a list of
- categories and keywords is displayed after the header and before
- your list of taglines.
-
- Line Spacing
- You can set the number of blank lines between each tagline by

-
- Grouping
- Messenger allows you to group your exported taglines by providing
- a blank line to divide each group. This format is more pleasing
- to view when using multiple taglines. An example grouping set to
- 2 is shown below.

- ACTIVATING THE FORMAT
- Messenger provides you with the check box "Use Format" in order
- to activate a previously saved format. When this option is
- checked, the taglines are exported according to your specified
- format. Removing the check results in a continuous list of
- taglines with no breaks or prefixes.
-
-
- SAVE FORMAT
- Use the command button labeled "Save" to save your format
- options. If you usually use a format when exporting taglines
- such as when using multiple taglines, then you will want to make
- sure the "Use format" option is checked before selecting Save.
- The next time you export taglines you won't have to bother with
- the format.

- CONFIGURE
- The configuration screen is divided into the following parts.
-
- Directories and File Names
- Settings
- Registration
- Color Settings
- Exit and Save Buttons
-
-
- TAGLINE DIRECTORY
- When installing Messenger, you are asked to choose a tagline
- directory. You may later choose to change that directory by
- entering a new path next to the heading of "Tagline Directory."
- Make sure to copy or move all files from the old directory to the
- new directory.
-
-
- TAGLINE IMPORT FILE
- Use this setting to set the default import file name found on the
- import screen. If you use a mail reader that adopts or steals
- taglines into an ASCII text file, you should use that file name
- as your import file, since this is from where you will be
- importing most of your taglines.
-
-
- HOW MESSENGER WORKS WITH YOUR MAIL READER
- Messenger uses one of two methods to pass taglines to your mail
- reader. The default method is to have your mail reader shell out
- to Messenger where it would normally shell out to the editor.
- Messenger then shells out to your editor and upon return allows
- you to pick out your tagline. The tagline is append to the end
- of your message and you are returned to your mail reader.
-
- The second way taglines can be passed to your mail reader is by
- having a mail reader that is able to shell out to a tagline
- manager. In this case, a tagline is returned to the mail reader
- in a special file. NOTE: Only some mail readers are capable of
- using this method.
-
- The first method has an advantage over the second method in that
- you can add multiple taglines to the end of your message. This
- is possible because Messenger appends the tagline return file to
- the end of the message, not the mail reader.

- TAGLINE RETURN FILE
- If you are using the first method of swapping out to the editor,
- then the name of the tagline return file can be whatever you
- choose. The default file name is EXPORT.TAG. However when using
- the second method, the tagline return file name must coincide
- with the file name your mail reader uses, for example the Blue
- Wave Reader uses the file name JH0.REP to input taglines from
- external tagline managers. Although Blue Wave does not allow to
- change this file name, other mail readers may allow you to do so,
- in which case you could change the mail reader setting to
- EXPORT.TAG.
-
-
-
- SELECTING MAIL READER METHOD
- The following options appear in the directory box.
-
- (*) Use Editor [ C:\DOS\EDIT.COM ]
- ( ) Write to Mail Reader Return File
-
- Select the first option if you want your mail reader to swap to
- Messenger then to your editor. This is the default method
- Messenger uses when installed. In the text box adjacent to the
- "Use Editor" option button, enter the path and file name of your
- editor. On installation, Messenger chooses the DOS editor by
- default.
-
- To use the method of running an external tagline manager, select
- the option "Write to mail reader file only". Remember to make
- sure the tagline return file name coincides with that of your
- mail reader.
-
-
-
- SETTINGS
- There are two settings that you should be aware of on the
- configuration screen. The first is the "Buffer Size". This
- setting determines the number of taglines (batch size) that are
- moved or alphabetized at one time. If your machine has limited
- memory, you may need to set this number low.
-
- Registered users have the option of turning the tagline tithe
- screen off although many will choose to keep this exciting
- feature active. To turn this feature off just click on Tithe
- Off.

- To activate your registration, enter the registration number in
- the box labeled "Registration Number" and then press ENTER. The
- cursor will drop to the box labeled "Registered User's Name".
- Make sure the registered user's name is entered correctly because
- the name cannot be changed without re-installing the program.
-
-
- COLOR SETTINGS
- You can change the color settings on all of the objects on any of
- the Messenger screens through the three list boxes on the bottom
- of the configuration screen. To change the color of an object,
- first select the screen which contains your object from the list
- box labeled "Screen". Next select the object from the Object
- list box. And finally pick the desired color form the list box
- labeled "Color". Use the SAVE command button before exiting the
- configuration screen or your new settings will not be saved.

- MAIL READER SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
- ==============================
-
- The accompanying file QSETUP.TXT explains one of two methods
- (depending on your reader) of getting Messenger to work with your
- mail reader. That document is intended to quickly help you get
- Messenger installed and working with your mail reader. More
- thorough instructions are listed below in this document.
-
- In order for Messenger to work with you mail reader, your reader
- must either be able to shell out and call up an external text
- editor or shell out to a tagline manager. Most readers are able
- to call up external text editors.
-
-
- ACCESSING MESSENGER THROUGH THE EDITOR
- Normally when you enter or reply to a message, your mail reader
- calls up a text editor or word processor, you enter the message,
- return to the mail reader, and your reader adds a tagline. The
- chart below shows the process.
-
- MAIL READER --> EDITOR --> MAIL READER--> READER ADDS TAGLINE
- (shell out) (enter message) (back to reader) (tagline added)
-
-
- In order to have Messenger work with your mail reader, you must
- first tell your mail reader to use Messenger as its editor and
- tell Messenger the name of your editor. Then when you enter
- mail, your mail reader calls up Messenger (which you never see),
- Messenger in turn calls up your editor, you enter your message,
- you return to Messenger where you now choose your tagline, and
- finally you return to the mail reader. The process is show in
- the chart below.
-
- MAIL READER--> MESSENGER--> EDITOR--> MESSENGER--> MAIL READER
- (shell out) (shell out) | (add tag & return to reader)
- |
- (enter message)
-
- Since a tagline is added directly to the message, no tagline is
- needed from the mail reader. You should turn off the tagline
- option in your mail reader or double taglines will appear at the
- bottom of your message. You may also need to change a swapping
- option in your mail reader if you do not have enough memory to
- run Messenger.

-
-
-
- YOUR MAIL READER'S EXTERNAL TAGLINE MANAGER OPTION
- Some mail readers such as Blue Wave and Silver Xpress have an
- option for using an external tagline manager. Unfortunately
- these programs only allow you to pass one tagline to the reader,
- so you will not be able to add multiple taglines to your message.
-
- The chart below shows how, first your mail reader calls up the
- editor, next you enter the message, then control goes back to the
- reader and it calls up Messenger, next you select your tagline,
- and finally you return to the reader where it adds the tagline to
- the message.
-
- MAIL READER --> EDITOR --> MAIL READER--> MESSENGER--> MAILREADER
- (shell out) (enter message) | (pick tag) (adds tag)
- (back to reader then
- shell to tagline manager)
-
-
- When you use this method of interfacing Messenger with your
- reader, you will need to know the file name your reader uses for
- passing taglines. The Blue Wave Reader V2.12 uses the file name,
- JH0.REP to pass taglines, and this name cannot be changed. The
- Silver Xpress reader allows you enter what ever file name you
- choose. Read your mail reader documentation for more
- information regarding your individual mail reader. Before
- Messenger will pass taglines to your reader, you will need to one
- of the following depending on your reader:
-
- 1) On Messenger's Configure screen enter the path and
- tagline file name in the "Mailreader file" setting.
-
- Example: Mailreader file [C:\BWAVE\JH0.REP ]
-
- 2) Change your mail reader's tagline file name setting to
- reflect Messenger's default file name of EXPORT.TAG.
