  1. THE SERV-U PROMO MESSAGE
  2. ========================
  3. This is Serv-U version 2.4, a flexible and easy to set up FTP server 
  4. (or Daemon) for MS-Windows (Win3.1, WFW3.11, Win95, Win98, NT). It turns
  5. any PC with a network connection into a FTP site on the Internet.

  7. Serv-U offers the following:
  8. * A Windows standard: Over 9000 registered users with many for multiple
  9.   copies.
  10. * Lots of security: Passwords, read/write/modify rights per directory or 
  11.   file for each user (including ANONYMOUS), access on the basis of 
  12.   IP-number.
  13. * Supports multiple simultaneous users and transfers.
  14. * Both in 16- and 32-bit, fast, and rock solid!
  15. * Support for UL/DL ratios, disk quota limitations and network bandwidth
  16.   limiting.
  17. * Can run as a 'system service' in Windows 95 and a tray-icon in Windows 95,
  18.   Windows 98, and NT 4.
  19. * Users can be put into groups for easy maintenance of large numbers.
  20. * Access to all drives on your PC, including network drives.
  21. * A quite complete (and strict) implementation of RFC959 and RFC1123, 
  22.   including PASV.
  23. * Supports resuming of file uploads and downloads, as well as 'ls' 
  24.   options and 'links' like those in UNIX.
  25. * Supports multi-homed IP sites. 
  26. * Configurable messages for signon, signoff, login, greeting, and
  27.   directory changes.
  28. * Has a 'time-out' feature, so connections are automatically cleared when
  29.   idle or hung.
  30. * Easy to setup and maintain through menus. For automated maintenance the 
  31.   settings are stored in an .INI file of simple format.
  32. * Has an open architecture which makes monitoring, changing and extending
  33.   the server behavior possible through external DLLs.
  34. * Logs all transactions to file and screen that can be read by other 
  35.   applications. Includes unique session IDs, time, and date stamps. 
  36. * Log file can be read by other applications while open, or transferred 
  37.   through Serv-U.
  38. * It is dirt cheap, around 0.1ct per line of code!

  41. TRY-OUT
  42. =======
  43. Serv-U is shareware, which means you can try it before you decide to 
  44. register (or not). Feel free to pass the try-out version around, but 
  45. please do not distribute any registration keys. The 45 day try-out 
  46. version comes in two flavors, one of which can be chosen during the 
  47. first start-up: Either a fully functional version that contacts a 
  48. permission server to enforce the 45 days of try-out, or, a slightly 
  49. crippled version that does not contact the permission server.

  52. INSTALLATION/UPGRADING
  53. ======================
  54. Serv-U comes in a zip-file which in turn contains a deluxe install
  55. program guiding you through the installation. Just unzip the zip-file
  56. in a temporary directory and run the setup program. Depending on your PC
  57. either the 16- or 32-bit version will be installed. Then follow the
  58. interactive setup and it will do the hard work for you. The setup
  59. program also installs a start menu group and un-installer program.
  60. Once you are done you can delete the original zip-file and extracted
  61. files. An uninstall program is also included which makes complete
  62. removal of all Serv-U files easy.

  65. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ISDN USERS
  66. =============================
  67. If your ISDN connection is billed 'per minute' instead of a flat rate, 
  68. and you have set up your system in such a way that it automatically 
  69. connects to the Internet when a program wants to send/receive packets a 
  70. little care is needed with Serv-U. Serv-U contacts the permission server 
  71. if it is started in fully functional try-out mode. If you are behind a 
  72. firewall, or the permission server is not reachable, Serv-U will keep 
  73. retrying to find the permission server. Meanwhile the server will work 
  74. just fine, but your phone bill might get a bit out-of-hand if this goes 
  75. on for a week or so...

  78. NOTES FOR SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS
  79. ===============================
  80. The self-extracting installation executable is a zip-file in itself 
  81. which can be unpacked using any unzip utility. This lets you scan the 
  82. executables in there for viruses if needed. Also, instead of the 
  83. interactive setup Serv-U can be installed by simply copying the 
  84. executable (SERV-U16.EXE or SERV-U32.EXE) into its destination 
  85. directory. No other system changes are needed.
