- 1.1 -- What To Do If Data Collection Does Not Work
- the First Time...
-
- When you enter WINCheckIt for the first time, you are
- given the option of performing a data collection using
- the Collect Now button or proceeding into WINCheckIt
- without collecting data using the No Data button.
-
- If you run the data collection and it hangs, re-enter
- WINCheckIt and choose the No Data option. This way,
- you can perform a ôminimumö data collection (see the
- On-line Help System for this procedure) to hopefully
- isolate the problem. A minimum data collection does
- not interrogate your system as aggressively as the
- default data collection. Once the minimum data
- collection is performed, you can troubleshoot the
- system with the collection results.
-
-
- 1.2 -- Installing the Four-Volume Technical Reference
- Library From CD
-
- The four-volume Technical Reference Library must be
- installed from the CD itself. The WINCheckIt Setup
- will not install the library.
-
- To install the library from the CD, go to Windows
- Program Manager, select the File Menu in the upper
- left, click on the Run command, then type the
- following:
-
- [CD-ROM Drive Letter (D, E, etc.)]:\setup
-
- Once this command line is entered, click on the OK
- button. The library will be installed along with a
- viewing package called Acrobat Reader. This program
- requires 2Mb of free hard disk space. The books will
- not be copied onto your system.
-
-
- 1.3 -- I/O and Memory Mapping For 32-Bit Accessing
-
- Memory Address Mapping
- ----------------------
- Memory addresses in 16-bit applications (as in Windows
- 3.1) are made up of an eight-character string in the
- range between 0000-0000 to FFFF-FFFF.
-
- Memory addresses in 32-bit applications (as in Windows
- 95) are made up of a sixteen-character string in the
- range between 00000000-00000000 to FFFFFFFF-FFFFFFFF.
-
- At this time, WINCheckIt does not read beyond the
- 16-bit eight-character limit, meaning that if a device
- is installed in Windows 95 using a 32-bit memory
- address beyond the eight-character FFFF-FFFF limit,
- WINCheckIt will not display it.
-
- This problem affects the settings in the Setup
- AdvisorÆs Details screen, which does not work with the
- expanded 32-bit range.
-
- I/O Address Mapping
- -------------------
- In the same manner as the memory address display
- problem, Windows 3.1 (16-bit) uses I/O addresses made
- up of six characters in the range of 000-000 to
- FFF-FFF. Windows 95 added two characters to extend the
- range to 0000-0000 to FFFF-FFFF.
-
- At this time, WINCheckIt does not read beyond the
- 16-bit six-character limit, meaning that if a device
- is installed in Windows 95 using a 32-bit I/O address
- beyond the six-character FFF-FFF limit, WINCheckIt
- will not display it.
-
- This problem affects the settings in the Setup
- AdvisorÆs Details screen, which does not work with the
- expanded 32-bit range.
-
- 1.4 -- Old CKD Files in Windows Benchmarks
- ------------------------------------------
- If you install WINCheckIt 4.0 over a previous version
- of WINCheckIt, any data collection files (CKD files)
- created under the older version will not be accessible
- in the Windows Benchmark window. This is because these
- CKD files do not have Windows Benchmark data attached
- to them.
-
-
- 1.5 -- Do Not Use PIF Files to Run Tests Directly
- -------------------------------------------------
- In WINCHECKIT/PIF subdirectory under the WINCheckIt
- directory (default is TOUCHST), there are PIF files
- that correspond to the tests in the Tests menu in
- WINCheckIt. Do not run these tests using their
- corresponding PIF files. The tests will not work
- because WINCheckIt writes into the PIF files. You must
- run the tests from the WINCheckIt program.
-
- 1.6 -- Restoring a Program in Windows 95
- ----------------------------------------
- When you restore a program using the Uninstall utility
- in Windows 95, the program name under the icon appears
- in ALL CAPS. To change the name to upper/lower case,
- click on the icon, highlight the name, and type in the
- proper name.
-
- 1.7 -- Data Collection in Windows 95
- ------------------------------------
- During a data collection in Windows 95, when the video
- test is activated, the monitor screen goes black for a
- couple seconds. Do not worry. The data collection has
- not failed. The blackout is part of the test.
