  20. Take The Alteration by Kingsley Amis. Although a
  21.  mainstream writer, Amis has a long association with
  22.   science fiction, and his book portrays modern day
  23.  England without the reformation. The Catholic Church
  24.    still holds sway, and the best choirboys are kept for the
  25.  church through castration - the alteration of the title.
  26.   Amis's book is a lovely example, beaten only by the
  27.  master of this style, Keith Roberts.
