  65. <font size=5><b>T</b></font>here isn't much money to be made yet, Price says: 'We're having to make our hay while the sun shines. The Internet is not a particularly big goldmine and
  66. once the bodies start stepping down on the activity it will be the big guys who are left.'

  68. <font size=5><b>E</b></font>veryone is nervous about the impact of licensing regulations. 'They will have to start making massive examples of people,' says Price. King adds: 'No-one
  69. wants to be the first person to be in the test case. It will take up lots of money and it will take years.

  71. <font size=5><b>'W</b></font>e're saying to the likes of PRS that we're trying to develop a 
  72. market before we can give them any money. Record companies 
  73. and licensing companies are
  74. confused because they are up against a huge number of 
  75. people and can't keep track of everything.'

  79. <font size=5><b>A</b></font>ndrew Beck, broadcasting technology officer at PRS, 
  80. is responsible for tracking music activity on the Internet. 
  81. 'My job is to go out and see what's there,'
  82. he says. 'I spend my whole day looking to find what music 
  83. sites there are and note them down for future reference when 
  84. we have worked out licensing
  85. regulations. 
  86. <p>
  87. <font size=5><b>'A</b></font>t the moment, we are still looking into licensing music
  88.  on the Internet. It is covered under current legislation, 
  89. under Cable Programme Services in the
  90. Copyright & Patents Act 1988. People who don't have a 
  91. licence are in theory breaking the law but no-one has 
  92. been taken to court and sued yet. It's also
  93. difficult to trace where the site is because we can't 
  94. license servers outside the UK, although we have associated 
  95. bodies elsewhere.' 
  96. <p>
  97. <font size=5><b>P</b></font>RS is also talking to service providers about paying the 
  98. licence fee and the body has approached Demon Internet, an 
  99. established music content host.
  100. Demon currently offers two free RealAudio streams to all its
  101.  รบ10 per month customers to enhance their pages.

  103. <font size=5><b>T</b></font>he next step is digital distribution. Many sites have sound
  104.  files or samples which can be downloaded for free but 
  105. those such as the <a href="http://www.cdj.co.uk/">
  106. Cerberus Digital
  107. Jukebox</a> will download a track for around 
  108. 60p. The company isn't making much profit yet but it expects 
  109. the market to take off in the next
  110. couple of years and has licensing agreements prepared.

  112. <font size=5><b>R</b></font>ecord companies may move the same way. 'A lot of record
  113.  companies are already setting up their own sites and
  114.  offering their music over the Web and
  115. that could be our biggest threat,' says Music Stop's
  116.  Pincott. 'But they won't push it too far because it would
  117.  upset too many record shops and they'd
  118. restrict shop space.' 
  119. <p>
  120. <font size=5><b>I</b></font>nternet music may be restricted to marketing for now, but
  121.  the industry looks set to blossom when the quality of audio 
  122. over the Internet improves.
  123. Licensing issues are the cloud on the horizon but the 
  124. potential for profit over the next two years is there - 
  125. and that will be music to everyone's ears.
