As clocks tick over into the new century at midnight on Friday 31st December 1999, millions of computers will forget how to tell the time: planes will fall out of the sky as their navigation systems fail; bank cash machines will refuse to dispense money as cash cards mysteriously expire; supermarket shelves will be bare because automated ordering systems have broken down; business empires will crumble and stock markets will crash as computers forget who owes what to whom, and when. On top of this, an estimated 250 million ordinary PCs in homes and offices around the world will become useless.
